Hi everyone! I need someone or someones to help me out.

Hi, Becky. Hopefully, you remember me from last year’s State Parks Interpretation Workshop when you and Ralph presented your program on geocaching to our staff. You did such a fabulous job — your presentation was really popular with our folks! In fact, everyone was so interested in geocaching that I’ve actually purchased 8 sets of GPS units (8 units in each set) that will be housed at some of our properties this summer for use in educational programs and for loan to families who want to try their hand at geocaching. Pretty cool stuff!

So, I’m wondering if you’d be willing to come and speak to our group again, this time actually leading an in-the-field session to help us learn to use our new GPS units (very basic — Garmin eTrex H), plan a family-friendly geocache program, and run through a few hands-on activities with the group. The session would take place at Hartman Creek State Park near Waupaca on Wed., June 10 from 12:30 to 2:00. I’m actually envisioning splitting the period in half, so you’d address half of the group at a time and do your presentation twice. What do you think? If this isn’t something you’d be able/willing to do, could you suggest someone else? I’d sure appreciate the help. Thanks. S.

Unfortunately, I am unable to get off work for this date. Ralph is checking his calendar.

Can anyone PLEASE help out with this? If so, contact me ASAP and I will give you contact information for Sherry.

    Thanks in advance!

First, that’s awesome feedback, well done you two!!!

Midday of any week is tough for me or I’d be willing. However, I will try to get out there and make sure mine are in good shape and maybe plant one or two new ones for this session.

I expect someone with more time on their hands will come through for you.

    Becky –

It looks like I can commit to being a part of the June 10 presentation at Hartman Creek. Anybody else willing to jump in with resources, advice, caches, etc. will certainly be welcome!

Please share an overview of what was presented last year to avoid too much duplication. Thanks

    Jim

I would need to check my work schedule but may be able to lend a hand on this. at least to give some moral support and maybe some suggestions/answers. Hard to leave something like this in my backyard without getting involved somehow. the hands on with the garmin though…. not really up to speed on all the functions on these units.

Yes! We can do this! Technology we can handle! (We have the eTrex H.) We know Hartman Creek! We have been considering adding some caches there! We are just over an hour away! We are free that day!

We would have no idea of what to do!

I agree. That is really cool that the DNR is again taking great interest in geocaching!

I believe this is being handled very well by the teams of Gram&Gramps and sandlanders. But, if more help is needed, I’m sure they’ll let us know.

    Thanks for the offer!

Today Gramps and the two sandlanders made geocaching presentations to two groups of naturalists and interpreters as part of the three-day DNR State Parks Interpretation Workshop. Today’s activities were at Hartman Creek State Park, and since geocaching (along with questing) seemed to be the Grand Finale, we hope we left everyone wanting more.

Since many of these people already knew something about geocaching (thanks to Greyhounder and zuma from last year), we focused on them placing caches on their own properties and working with area geocachers to increase the profile and activity of geocaching in state parks and other DNR properties. We hope many of you get contacted for your input and maybe even get the chance to bring more people into Wisconsin geocaching.

The bulk of each presentation was having the attendees pair up and work with the GPS units. They first learned how to put coordinates into the provided GPS receivers, then after some other brief instruction on the use of the units, they went out to find some cache containers that the three of us had previously placed a quarter of a mile or less from the starting location. We would then circulate to provide guidance and assistance when necessary, but it was exciting to see how quickly most of our “students” picked up the skill of following their receivers to the cache locations.

If you ever get the opportunity to share your enthusiasm about geocaching, whether it is officially through something like this, or a Geocaching 101 type event, or through local schools and youth groups, or unofficially with newer cachers you may meet, be they family, friends, or total strangers, helping someone discover or perfect a new skill is as great a high as finding that ammo can in the woods!

    Thanks for the opportunity, Bec!
