I was just wondering if anyone uses one of these radios while caching?
I see theat there is mention of them under the GC.Com FAQ section.

While I’m not sure what kind of radios we have, my boyfriend and I have recently started using 2-way radios for caching. I didn’t think they’d really be of much use; we don’t get that far away from each other when searching, but I’m glad we have them now. It’s nice to be able to talk in a normal voice instead of shouting. I clip mine to my collar; a hand-held one would be too in-the-way. And I guess it is a bit safer, especially when we’re in very unfamiliar places or if it’s getting dark. Ours were aboug $35 for the pair. They came with battery packs and chargers and have an 8-mile range, so they work fine for caching.

We only use them while at the WGA events, in which case they are a lot of fun.

In the rare occasion when we have two cars of people out caching, we will use them between the vehicles.

We occasionally use them too. Sometimes when we take ET the handicapped fellow we cache with, we reach a place in the trail where it is to difficult for him to go any further one of us will stay with him with a radio while the other finishes finding the cache.

We use them mainly just at geo-events.

We haul enough stuff in the woods without bring them along to every cache (it would be different if we didn’t have cell phones).

However, we typically have them in our car, so if we attempt a really “back woods” cache, we take them along besides a couple other extra things (such as a short rope to use as a portable hand rail for the kids).

You don’t bring your own handrails? 😆

Since I have a Garmin Rino, my FRS radio is on pretty much all the time I’m caching. Problem is, we rarely hear any traffic on it.

We take it to geo-events and, of course, there’s lots going on there. But out in “the wild” there just isn’t much air traffic to have it be worthwhile having it on.

I’ve got a pair of cheap FRS (free after rebate) units and a slightly better Motorla one that supports VOX and all that.

We’ve used the cheap ones a few times – they come in handy, and it’s easier to use them than our mobile phones in some circumstances. We also tend to use our mobiles for pictures, so it’s nice to be able to be on two different sides of a tangle or creek and be able to share pictures and chat if necessary.

We tend to take them but leave them off unless we’re separated for some reason.
