    From gc.com guidelines:

    Off-limit (Physical) Caches

Caches near, on or under public structures deemed potential or possible targets for terrorist attacks. These may include but are not limited to highway bridges, dams, government buildings, elementary and secondary schools, and airports.

I didn’t mean near the school building. Besides there is probably no good space near the building. I meant on MPS owned property. The school system own lots of land that is wooded and would make for a good spot far away from buildings.

I don’t know if MPS specifically has rules, but if you want to place a cache on school property, you need to get formal permission from the appropriate school official. We let the school determine how close is too close, but you need to be at least 150 feet away from any buildings. You would be expected to provide name, title and contact info for whoever provides permission, hours when the cache would be available, and parking coordinates. We would also expect that you would provide your own contact information to the school in case the cache you place is causing any issues.

There have been caches in Hawthorne Woods and in Potters Woods in the past. Both are MPS property and neither is near (500 feet) any MPS school.

Trudy & I had made attempt to get through the multiple levels of bureaucracy at MPS to ferret out policy or guidance without much luck. After a couple of visits and speaking to almost a dozen people, We were able to come up with the name Kevin Reed and phone 647-6067. He was supposedly The Director of MPS Outdoor Recreation. We attempted to contact him only to find that he was on vacation. We finally gave up and went on to other pursuits. This all took place two-four years ago, I don’t recall. ~tb

The person who might know who to talk to about this is green & gold. He teaches near Milwaukee and I’m pretty sure he has had caches on school owned property.

      Thanks
I want to put one in Hawthorn Woods. I was surprised there wasn’t one there (I found one there years ago) and so wondered about the rules.
I also want to put one on the administration grounds.

I got an answer from the property manager at the Milwaukee School system. I was asked to not publish his name but if anyone needs to know I will tell you. I got permission for Hawthorn Glen and the Administration building site. I also asked about schools. If there is anything public at the school or on the grounds you need a permit but we really don’t fall under those rules (I said we would be no where near the building) and so as long as we are discrete and not near the building it would be OK. It is considered public property so we are allowed. I got sort of a; what we don’t know won’t hurt you.

green&gold is a teacher in the Whitnall School District
he has obtained permission to place caches on WSD land
as he teaches math and uses GPS receivers as part of that.
