I see you can now “like” caches for Facebook and nominate caches for the Lost and Found. Is this a good thing?

I just saw that. I think it’s pretty stupid. 🙄

I agree, but maybe I am too old to understand its need.

Add one more from the Peanut Gallery. 🙄
“You like me! You really like me!” Puh-leeze!

Eventually, you will probably be able to see how many times a cache was “liked” and thus have some sort of filter for selecting which cache you might want to look for.

Why not just do a bit of research and read the logs? That’s a better indication of if a cache is worth doing than arbitrary points and “likes”. Yeah, a filter is easier, but this is geocaching. Easy??????????

I like the “problem with found/hidden count on friends page – removed” brilliant…

I of course don’t know the complexity of doing so but it would seem more logical to fix something… might as well remove the whole page IMHO. Oh well, can’t please everyone 100% of the time.

I don’t have any problem with a rating system. It’s just that, get facebook out of it!

After a person likes something on facebook, all 100, 200 or however many of their friends on facebook would be able to look at the cache page, and see just what it is that person “liked”.
Each of those facebook friends might as well be treated as another potential curious muggle who’s trying to figure out just what exactly it is that a person likes.

Also, there is no way to “unlike” a cache. Once it’s “liked”, apparently you like it for good. No turning back, no changing your mind. Your name is stuck on that cache page forever, I guess.

Do you need to find a cache to ‘Like’ it?

Usually, if we find a cache, we like it………………. 😀

But if we don’t find a cache, well then, that might be another matter…………………………. 😈

Anyone can like it. You don’t even need to be a geocacher to like it.

I did “like” a cache today and thought I could un-like but that couldn’t happen. Will never do THAT again.

Yeah, I did that too, just out of curiosity. Don’t think I’ll be using that feature any more, either.

All opinions, comments, and useless drivel I post are mine alone and do not reflect the opinions of the WGA BOD.

After all the talk on the Groundspeak forums about what a rating system should and shouldn’t be and the best they can come up with is a “Like” button? Really?

        Agreed…lame 🙄

We have to agree here-What is up with that? 🙄 We don’t get it, but then, we’re not Facebook folks either. In any case, we’ll be ignoring that new button! (Looks like the “eyeroll” emoticon is getting a workout in this thread.)

OK here’s another for the new Lost and Found component. 🙄

…just more clutter on the cache page; my hope is that the banner will go away shortly once we get used to the application (which also gets a 🙄 ).

I like the like button but agree it’s not really a rating system. It’s a tool for facebook users.

In general I like the networking aspect of where Groundspeak is heading with the blog and getting people involved with nominating caches and cache stories. The more people feel like they’re part of a community the better. At least that’s my opinion.

Apparently they made last minute changes to the “collectibles” feature as well so that folks can’t add items that are not your own to your collections. I have not played with this functionality at all but there are interesting conversations about it going on in the groundspeak forums. Using the term collectibles does sort of stand in the way of the trackable/movement idea. There’s one suggestion out there that I really like which is deeming a trackable as moveable or collectible and that way the owner controls how a particular item can be logged and what actions can take place. For instance a collectible could be discovered and not taken or dropped and a moveable could be taken or dropped. Would be handy for those vehicle TB’s and tatoo’s out there as well 😉

Anyone use the new Owner Maintenance log type on an Earthcache yet?? 😉

Seems lame when if an update is needed all you need to is change the page text….and post a note if needed.

Re: the lost and found….the whole blog thing seems kinda lame but I guess if folks have that much time on their hands…

(as a side note I have removed all but about a dozen family members and freinds from my Facebook friends so if I defriended you it was nothing personal…there are no geocachers among my Facebook friends).

Doesn’t bother me any. I use facebook to network with others who want to network.

You could always post the URL to a cache page in a facebook post so there’s nothing really new here, it’s just much easier now and it indicates you “like it”.
