I recently had an Earthcache approved. As you know, these have tasks have to be done to log the find. If a cacher does not do this and logs a find, I would assume I delete the log? I sent a reminder yesterday, but this cacher has not e-mailed me the required tasks answers. (I just feel guilty deleting someone’s log is all… 🙄 )

I’m not sure you have a choice….the earthcache folks say the finder must complete a learning task. It sucks but I’m sure my turn will come as well.

#5 of the rules for Earthcache placement:

      5. Logging of EarthCache sites must involve visitors undertaking some educational task that relates to the site. This could involve them measuring or estimating the size of some feature or aspect of the site, collecting and recording some data (such as time of a tidal bore), or searching and sending via e-mail to the developer, some earth-science fact that they find from signage that relates to the site. Developers should try to involve visitors in learning from the site rather than just logging a visit. Logs should show that the visitors have ‘learnt’ by visiting your EarthCache site. Taking a photograph alone, having visitors sending a word from a sign, or asking people to do internet research does NOT meet these logging guidelines.

One of the reasons I have a photo as part of the requirements for each of my Earth caches is so that the information requested from the finders can be a bit “fuzzy.” I have found that most everyone comes up with different answers for the questions posed on my Earth caches. The Photo allows for the answers to be a bit more lenient….however someone with no answers submitted is another issue.

      “…no soup for them!”

Well I have had to delete finds on my Earth caches now and I have had to badger a few people into sending me the information or to upload photos….kinda sux that people don’t follow directions (and even I am not immune from this failure to read, understand and comply with the cache page directions).

So basically what I’m sayin’ is that you need to be on your toes and be willing to delete finds if you want to have an Earth cache….

(and don’t get me started on waiting for permissions…..I’m again waiting….and waiting. It sux that I need to get permission to place an imaginary container in a public park.)
