Becca, there are opportunities for all kinds of ECs at Hartman Creek! Good ones are glacial erratics, glacial kettles, terminal moraines, spring-fed lakes… If you want to work up any of those ideas, I can get you coordinates and take photos for you so that at least one EC can be in place before the campout.

Thanks for the offer, I’ll let you know if I find the time before the campout. I would especially be interested in something involving Long Lake. My great-grandparents had a lake house there and so nearly every year we drove up here from Colorado (where I grew up) to visit. Lots of fond memories there and nearly the only place in Wisconsin I visited as a child. I haven’t been back in about 15 years so I am looking forward to it. Anyway, I will do a little digging and see what I can come up with. I appreciate the offer.

Not to be a party pooper, but make sure you check the guidelines and knowledge book on the Earthcache site.
From their knowledge book:

3.5 EarthCache Types That Have Been Widely Used
Some types of Earthcaches have been widely used. New submissions may be accepted if they provide an excellent Earth science lesson.

Waterfall Classification: We no longer accept EarthCache submissions featuring the various types of waterfalls with a logging task asking to identify the type of waterfall at a particular location. Waterfall EarthCaches with specific information about the local geology and related logging tasks are acceptable.

Artesian Wells/Springs: A general description of how an artesian well or spring forms will not be accepted. The EarthCache should include details about the geological conditions that caused the artesian well/spring to be formed at the selected location.

Glacial Erratics: We are currently seeing many submissions for glacial erratic boulders as the basis for EarthCaches. We have decided that we will no longer publish these EarthCaches unless you provide an excellent Earth science lesson and related logging tasks. No longer acceptable will be logging tasks that just ask for dimensions of erratic blocks, or the calculation of the weight of the blocks. You need to work a lesson around the specific site that relates the geology of the blocks to the surrounding geology and some task that links those blocks to the action of the glaciers that brought them here. This will require you to be innovative.

I only know that from the Iowa Geocaching site that the directive for the erratics tightened up recently, to me while Earthcaches are great if done correctly they are getting to the point that I don’t want to consider even doing one anymore or doing them anymore. Any ways back on topic..

Party pooper! 😛 Just kidding. 😆 Good point, I had read that too and I wouldn’t want to cover something that has been overdone. But considering the fact that there isn’t much around as far as EC’s go, my options are wide open. I’m sure I can come up with something and maybe when we are there others can give suggestions as well. I very much enjoy EarthCaches, although some are definately better than others.

What?? Another Colorado native stuck in the SECOND best state? Caching wasn’t around for long when I moved up here, but I constantly think of the LONG list of Earthcaches I could place in Colorado.

I know what you mean. I keep emailing my mom with my ideas for earthcaches for her to create but she doesn’t seem too interested. I think I may just send her out to get coordinates and pictures for some of my ideas and I may just create them anyway. Plus, I visited so many places in RMNP over and over again growing up and I would love log the current EarthCaches as finds. But that would be cheating so I don’t do it.

One of my favorite things to do, is look at the Earth caches in Colorado, and try to see how many I could “log” from already being there and knowing the answers to the questions already! I’ll have a nice “to-do” list next time I get out there.

Loveland eah? I actually attended Loveland High for one week. I lived all over the state, but from 6th-12th grade I lived in Fort Collins. My junior year, we were going to move to Loveland, so I transfered there early to start at a new semester…then my Mom got a last minute promotion, we stayed in Fort Collins, and I went back to Rocky Mountain High where I graduated from.

The Ice Age Trail runs thru HC for about 3 miles. One of the prominent geological features along the IAT, is a large, very deep kettle, that the trail loops around. The park ranger can show you on the map where it is. If recollection serves (and it may not) it is on the north end of the park, near where sandlanders put out their new cache, HC: Berry Pickin’ Trail
