I’m back at it, trying to build my cartridge with an alternative builder that many have used with success, earwigo. I’ve entered some initial information and saved it. What’s even more amazing, I can re-open it and continue to edit my work, which was the issue with the “official” builder for me.
Anyone else here ever try using this one? It explains things for a technophobe much more clearly, too.
02/20/2011 at 10:15 pm #1943415Good thing I re-read your post. Ticks are bad enough, but now earwigs. OK, now I understand.
02/20/2011 at 11:15 pm #1943416No, ticks are way worse than earwigs. Ask Trekkin’!
Yes, it is kind of a funny name. But it seems to be easier for a dork to use.
02/22/2011 at 1:25 am #1943417Well, guess I’m pretty much talking to myself here, but at least that way I know I’m being heard. 🙄 I’ve been picking my way through this project tiny steps at a time and so far, so good. Previously, I had done all my writing and gathering of info ahead of time and saved it to be transferred, so I don’t have to do that again. With the official builder, I kept getting the darn error message whenever I tried to re-open my work and continue. With this new builder, I’ve opened and closed it after editing/building multiple times with no issue at all.
I have a loooong way to go yet before asking a couple people to try it out with their various devices, but hopefully it will be coming. Though I can’t end it as planned originally, I think I can follow it through and find a reasonable place for the hide. My original choice fit the theme a lot better, but I’m probably the only one who even cared abou that!
02/22/2011 at 3:03 am #1943418Very glad to hear that you are going to be able to make it work. You have put way too much work into it to not use it. Way to Gwyn!
02/22/2011 at 3:27 am #1943419I’ve sent a request for an account, but the online documentation makes it look pretty promising.
02/22/2011 at 3:46 am #1943420The tutorial is clear, but kind of stops partway through. It’s set up for a more complicated style cartridge than this first one I want to do, which is basically a tour. But they have a lot of resources and links to other places to help. And I think even I can figure out whether or not I need to include tasks that involve lots of inventory, or just make it simple, with a little fun thrown in.
It did take a couple days before I got my account.
06/21/2012 at 5:26 pm #1943421Just finished reading this thread and I may take a look at this product. Does it include any samples?
I am thinking of putting together a entire series of catridges. I just spoke with the tourism coordinator down here and she is very interested in my idea
As I work through the process of building my first cartridge, I probably will be looking for some “expert” help.
10/05/2013 at 8:19 pm #1943422I think we all end up brut forcing our way through builds. I managed to assemble Duplicate Bridge Wherigo, but remembering what a pain it was to upload and keep track, i thought I’d give Earwigo a go and I do like the GUI and ability to constantly and quickly edit and save my cartridge.
I am having some issues determining where to build in the multiple choice variables, however, and could use some guidance from anyone whose managed to get something like that built into a comment event.
Please PM if you have some helpfull info, Gwyn or Mike or anyone else for that matter, I could use the assist!
10/06/2013 at 11:50 am #1943423Man, I haven’t looked at Wherigo for years since I built our two cartridges. I’m not a programmer so the learning curve was huge. Probably wouldn’t build one again.
On the Left Side of the Road...10/06/2013 at 1:01 pm #1943424I took coordinates for a whereigo and just haven’t gotten around to creating it. It’s so intimidating!

10/07/2013 at 1:01 pm #1943425Becca, if you want to do something similar to a wherigo, without the pain, check out http://intercaching.com/intercache/
These are designed to run on the web browser of any location aware smartphone. They don’t quite have the power of the wherigo engine (yet), but I think you will find it an acceptable alternative.
10/07/2013 at 7:39 pm #1943426Well that looks interesting…

I have used Earwigo.net extensively. I know this thread is five years old. But i you didn’t get a cartridge going and want to pick it back up, let me know. You have my email address and connected on the FB so just send me a message with your questions.
Or, use my universal Wonder Wherigo cartridge..

This is good to know! Thanks for sharing.
