Here is one closer to you:

GCBC4D Double Amputee. it is a single mound, but a very interesting one.

The Nitchke Mounds already mentioned is an excelllent example of lots of different mounds in one spot, with interp of possible meanings.

I’m not sure the reason you ask, but there is a park In Rice Lake that has some and a pretty good bet there are no caches near them since there a just but a few caches in Rice Lake. I’ll try to fond the link again.

Paul, IF I can get my cache submission to go through—which has not happened tonight after three attempts—there will be an awesome Earthcache at Effigy Mounds National Monument in Iowa. I’ve been working for three weeks with the Chief Ranger to make this happen and received Parks approval today.

I do know there is a cache in New Lisbon that is by effigy mounds, and another over in Whitewater.

The cache by New Lisbon is “New Lisbon Indian Mounds” (GCJ3M4), which we did at Thanksgiving with my aunt (now ninety) and uncle (eighty-eight)–they have their own “handle” now, a testimony that caching is ageless!

There is also one near Plainfield that we haven’t done–“Whistler Mounds” (GC80D8).

        Awesome folks….

Thanks very much. My daughter has a school project about effigy mounds and I figure what a great way to go caching and get her to see them in person.

            Paul,

Mine at Effigy Mounds is now live. I will have to wait until tonight to make the listing “pretty,” but the basics are all there now. It’s an awesome place with more preserved effigy mounds than anywhere else in the midwest. Great Visitor Center with displays and resources, too.

I have plans to find that one in late March / early April. 😛

The funny thing is I keep reading how rare these are and it seems like they are everywhere….until two weeks ago I didn’t know I lived about 2 miles from several of these. The fine folks building the new Pabst Farms complex here in Oconomowoc just went ahead and drove right into them…now they need to be repaired. I would like to place a cache there if it ever becomes parkland.

I enjoyed Whistler Mounds originally by Lil Otter (inherited by Sadowskifamily).

            From Wikipedia:
“Intaglio is a term from art applied to burial mounds that refers to a design cut into a hard surface. In this case, the burial mounds have designs cut into the ground, though intaglio broadly applies to burial mounds which are raised above the natural surface of the terrain. There are much more rare forms where they are left as indents below the natural terrain. These are typically in some effigy shape such as that of a cat which can be seen in Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin, where it is the last remaining intaglio mound in the state.”

Actually, I think there are only two known left in the whole country. Don’t come visit it now though – it’s buried under 2 feet of snow.
