Tim, this is one I’ve been thinking on for a while: GC1G4QP. About 3 miles on snowshoes, and the prerequisite terrain and scenic beauty. All we need are a few more victims, ah, er… volunteers ;). I know Benny wouldn’t mind a rematch. Takers?
Hmmmm,
For our anniversary last summer my wife and I signed on for a sea kayak tour of the caves and I’d planned to log this one. But the 20-30 mph winds had the big lake stirred up and the kayak tour place canceled the trip to the caves and took us to Bark Bay near Cornucopia. They need to make money, and I understood when I signed up they could plan an alternate trip if conditions made the sea caves unsafe- but Bark Bay couldn’t compare to a lot of fine kayak paddles right here in central Wisconsin! So, it was a let-down for sure.
This is something we would would be interested in. Though, from pictures I’ve seen of folks walking on the ice we really wouldn’t need snowshoes. I assume you’d plan to hike along the lake on the ice rather than the top?

That looks incredible. I’ve finally recovered from Sunday’s outing. I’ve always wanted to see the Islands. Being that far, and a bit more inhospitable to what I’m used to for the cold time of year, I will definitely have to do some serious thinking. I’m almost always up for a challenge and I absolutely hate defeat.
12/31/2009 at 7:16 pm #1918975How about Passingwind’s “St Peter’s Dome” earthcache, GC1BAQA. Along the way you can also hit Morgan Falls which is neat as it’s iced over in the Winter. Big parking lot and prtobably a 3-4 mile round trip. Snowshoed up there about 4-5 years ago. Great view from the top and the trail is gradual and snowshoe friendly.
If I may humbly recommend the Ice Age Trail Loop near New Auburn GC11V75, it is about a 4.5 mile loop with 4-5 caches along it. Trail starts and ends at the visitors center and passes through some great ice age topography. Perfect for snowshoing as the visitor’s center also rents snowshoes to those who don’t have any. A very popular snowshoe route with the locals.

I would be very interested in doing this one. The last time I was there I got with in .3 miles from it. I need to get this one OFF my list.

Lots of great suggestions but it seems like Seth has hit upon a winner. Now we just have to make it happen. Time for a new thread I think…
01/01/2010 at 3:00 pm #1918978We’ve sea kayaked in those caves and hiked up above in the fall. I’d love to see them in the winter. Hopefully we can join in the fun. I know the parking suggested in the cache listing is adequate, but there might be a lot of extra activity with respect to the cooking part. There is one weekend when there is some kind of race out to the islands, so we’d probably want to avoid that one.
St. Peters Dome would be awesome, too. We’ve also done the IAT loop. This thread shows there is so much to be seen in this state. It’s also great to see so much interest in outings like this that have nothing to do with numbers.
