So most of us have 3 things in common: 1) We like events because we like to hang out with caching buddies and have some laughs. 2) We like to take day trips caching because we have exhausted the caches in the town we live in. and 3)we pay too much for gas.
So that gives me an idea. What if we had an event cache which prompted us all to meet at a certain spot and then we rented a bus or even just car-pooled and shared gas costs or something and drove to another town to cache for the day and come back?
Of course, this would only work for folks who are already in the same general geographic region, but I wonder if it would be a popular idea. People do this kind of stuff for baseball games, casinos, site-seeing trips, etc all the time.
For example, (I live in Wausau), we could have an event in Wausau saying.. meet at Marathon Park at 7:30am. – we’re going to Milwaukee Then at 7:30 we team up, pile in a few cars and head to Milwaukee (or wherever else a good place would be).
Then next week, all the Milwaukee folks can have their event and come up to Wausau to experience our awesome caching (bring your boat!) π
Each team or car can pick their own route, really and decide when to come back for the day. The event could also include lunch together or a rendezvous sometime during the day or at the end of it.
So what do you think? Cool? Corny? Impractical? Not interested? Done it before? What’s your experience?
07/14/2008 at 5:29 pm #1892200Sounds like a good idea to me. I could see renting a small school bus for the day. You could fit plenty of people on it and it would fit in almost all parking lots. I am planning on doing this for the WB event.
07/14/2008 at 6:27 pm #1892201You have to be careful on how you present an ‘event’ at GC.COM.
An event for the purpose of going caching is not acceptable.
So I guess this event would get listed on the WGA only, but that should not be a major problem.
Hmmmmm. This sounds like my ‘Tours”. I usually send around a bunch of e-mails to solicit interest in a particular day and area to go caching.
A bus ….. ? I have found over the years that one vehicle (3-5 people) is enough. Two or more cars with some 8-12 people are too many. Someone is always in the back of the line, while the front finds the cache.
Just some thoughts …….
07/14/2008 at 8:43 pm #1892202I have to agree with Marc on this (darn it). Also the other issue you may run into is when a bus load of people suddenly walk over to a bush there tends to be a bit of wondering on the part of the locals. IMHO smaller groups are better for the permanence of the hides and the enjoyment of all involved; it’s not all that much fun for me to have someone hand me the log to sign after they found it 30 seconds before I even got on site.
07/14/2008 at 8:52 pm #1892203Yeah… the bus thing would have to be something for when there’s a huge park or concentrated urban area of caches that each cacher would have to walk to. The bus certainly couldn’t be hopping from cache to cache.
But I didn’t know that about the GC.com rules regarding events. That’s ok too… it just seemed like a good way to communicate the “tour” as Marc called it. But sending out e-mails would probably work too… Just include a “send this to 5 of your caching friends within 5 minutes or your gpsr will be cursed and you’ll never find a cache again”. The whole world will know about it!
I guess it’s a moot point … I’m not organized enough to put something like this together anyway π But I know someone who is π Thanks for the feedback, guys…
so to continue… do you think this would be a popular idea or are most people not that “into” caching to take a daytrip?

The bus is to bring them to the restaurant where everyone gets to swap solution for solution! Thanks for the idea Hemi!

GMO: I usually send e-mail to local area cachers. I have never asked anyone from the area I’m planning to cache in.
But that would be a good idea. Like the next time I pick Wausau, I would not mind having you along. Then, we could do PAF w/o needing a phone!!!
07/15/2008 at 4:43 am #1892206Another “variation” would be for a bunch of locals to get a bus to go to an out of town event. Round Lake and West Bend come to mind. Local transportation might be a problem… Maybe a bus with a bike rack.
My mind just wandered from a bus, to a van, to a limo. How funny would that be?07/15/2008 at 11:21 am #1892207to a limo
“Hey Limo driver, drive to the end of that roaed there and make a you-ey and park. Were going to get out and look for something and we’ll be back in a bit”…
“Hey Limo driver, can you stop at that park there and get us as close as you can to that clump of trees over there?”
Anyone cache the “Geocaching” for Wine bottles on “The Mole” last night?? Now that would be a cool event. Make it Beer and I’m game.
07/16/2008 at 2:28 am #1892208You missed another “common” reason… we like meeting people to know there are others out their as crazy as us….

09/15/2008 at 1:51 am #1892209That is a good idea. You could have a “traveling event” i am sure that a school district would let you rent a bus and then you could charge a small amount for the bus driver and the gas but if you got enough people you could then make money and donate it or put it in a fund to pay for other trips that have less ridership. You could probably get groups all around the state that then would all pool money and then everyone would pay a fixed fee and if they only got 12 people and it cost 15 people’s payment then it’s not like they are obliged to pay more but instead one with 20 would pool over to it. Not a bad idea to bring up at a wga meeting
