WGA sponsored events are just one of many responsibilities of the BOD. Barring weddings, funerals, graduation or other very important personal matters can I expect to see you at both the May Campout and September Picnic. As these are important functions of the WGA I would expect you to be able to adjust your work schedule for the events. Answers to this question will probably weigh the heaviest for our votes.

Unfortunately, I do not get to choose when I am on call at work. And when I am on call, I cannot travel very far. 30 minutes maximum.

However, If i have the dates correct, and my on-call schedule does not change (rarely does)I will be able to attend and help with the September Picnic, but I will be on call every day of the camp-out.

Sorry to hear this but my answer would be no for the camp out. The picnic would be one I would attend.

Reason? I don’t camp out anymore. I could see driving down for the meetings, but I don’t “do” sleeping in tents anymore. Last years events were in Kenosha and Adams if I’m not mistaken which is a good haul from Washington Island, yet I would feel obligated to make at least one if not the meetings of both.

I have been to most every major WGA event (2010 Picnic my car died) and I plan to continue to do so regardless of me being on the board or not.

Thank you Mr. and Mrs. Greenthumb for your question.

When I was first nominated for the BOD I was asked if I accept the nomination. I took a day to fully consider all aspects of what serving on the BOD would and could mean. One of the duties I feel is important is to be visible and approachable. I am committed to attend the picnic and camp-out barring, as you stated, life’s major events.

I have been in a leadership position within my profession for the last 14 years and one thing that has always helped me succeed is being available and having the proverbial “open door policy.” I see this opportunity as being no different and plan to be at the camp-out, picnic and winter event.

We usually plan our weekend travels around events, and would plan on attending both the picnic and campout, we have started attending more events around Wisconsin in the last couple of years, and plan on attending more in the future, Usually our travels are at the drop of the hat, and some if not most of the time we do not make reservations at campgrounds until the last minute, but will be making reservations near both of these events soon.

I have attended every major WGA event since my first WGA event in May 2005 at Lake Wissota State Park, except for one Geo-Picnic.

Since elected to the Board in 2007, I have attended, and worked on every major WGA event.

Campout 2007 was at Hartman. Robin and I camped, placed caches for the event, and stayed Sunday to help with the breakfast and pick up caches

The Picnic in 2007 was at Wildcat State Park, and Robin and I were part of the group that came down 2 weeks prior to the event and placed caches for the event, and then stayed Sunday to go pick up caches.

Campout 2008 was at Governor Dodge and I came down weeks in advance and placed temp caches. A memorable event for me because I got quite ill on the trail, and ending up missing Sunday.

Picnic in 2008 was at Lapham Peak, and I helped with registration and keeping out of the rain.

Campout in 2009 was at High Cliff, and I helped with registration, grilling, etc.

Picnic in 2009 was at Lake Wissota, and I was chair of the event committee and the lead organizer of that event. I also placed about 25 permanent caches for that event.

Campout in 2010 was at Bong, and helped out here and there, but mostly didnt have to do much for that event since others were taking the lead.

Picnic in 2010 was at RAC, and like Bong I didnt have do much since the event committee did such a great job. But I did help out here and there where needed and did whatever Labrat and Sandlanders told me to do.

My primary contribution to our successful events is trying to get as many people involved in our empowered committees, and letting the group work together to plan and put on a successful event. My basic philosophy here is that we need to get as many people involved helping out, instead of expecting board members to do all the work, which is how it used to be. That way, people can pick and choose which events they want to help out with, without feeling obligated to attend them all.

I do think an expectation of board members would be to a part of the event planning process, contribute to the ongoing discussions of the event committees, and to attend the majority of WGA events.

    Thanks for the great question.

Barring anything major happening we plan on attending the campout and the picnic. We might not camp at the campout we might just stay for the day and part of the night but we plan on being there for these events. But we might stay and camp in our camper if we can get a site with electrical hook up as I have sleep apnea and I need to use a machine to sleep. Other than that we will be there.
