Last weekend I pulled up to a Northwoods cache that started at a firelane as a group of geocachers where getting out of their vehicle. They started into the woods before my family(wife and two children) and I started our own walk. It was not long before we realized that it was a total bushwack so my family (all in shorts) decided they would wait in the car. I started the bushwack and it was not long before I caught up to the other cachers. I started the regular geotalk with the closest individual who was very nice. After about 30 seconds of talk, one of the other members in the group just started having a fit and screaming that they were all going to have to head back now that I was there. Startled, I asked what I was doing that was bothering the cacher and they continued ranting about how I just barged into the woods when I clearly knew they were there, that I was overtaking them and how they were there first. I calmly offered to stay back on top of the ridge and wait for them to locate the cache. We were still over 200 feet away at this point. As I waited I could clearly see this group searching all over the place for the cache. I watched until I saw one of the cachers pull down their pants and start to urinate. I quickly turned around and waited now with my back to the group. I waited for about 15 minutes until I could no longer hear voices from below. I turned around and saw nobody in the search area so I went down to do my search. After about 3 minutes, the group came out from the other side of the stream and crossed over and walked by me. I never said a word and neither did they. I found the cache quickly after they they began walking away. I waited a few more minutes to be sure they were well in front of me and I bushwacked out. As I got to the end I could see them about 75 feet in front of me getting into their vehicle. I got into mine and began to drive off. As I was telling my family this story, they told me that when this group got out of the woods, the rude and angry cacher crumpled up a piece of paper and threw it towards the road. Here is my log from that cache:

“This one was a whole new experience for me. When we pulled up we clearly saw another caching team getting ready to go into the woods. We started just after them and it was not long before we caught up. Thinking this group was like other geocachers I have run into I started some geotalk with one of them as we were bushwacking towards GZ. It was not long before another member of this team started throwing a fit about me over-taking them and how they were there first. Startled, I offered to stay back and wait on the ridge while they continued rather than tag along and be friendly. This was the rudest and meanest geocacher I have ever run into. Thank god 99.9% of the others are not that way. Thanks for the enjoyable walk (alone) in the woods and a peaceful spot for the quick find.”

Tonight I received he following email:

Crippler, remove you post @ GC000 or we will notify the web site and post the truth about you. You alone chased 4 women into the woods and creeped us out. thank you

The user name was created today and the email address is bogus. Obviously, I do not need to prove how awful this individual was.

Anybody else have a cacher horror story?

I think I would notify someone at Groundspeak. Tell them what happen. send them the email you recieved. Didn’t happen to get name from the log or didn’t the sign it.

Wow-that’s some story. Hope we never run into that lovely bunch. No, we’ve never run into anyone who wasn’t totally friendly and pleasant, let alone as obnoxious as those people were.

They did not sign the log because I am not sure they found it. I found the container in an area they did not spend much time near. I sent an abuse e-mail to Groundspeak. Thanks

Jeez 😯 That beats any experience I’ve ever had…come to think of it, I don’t think I’ve ever had a bad experience with another cacher. But, hey, there’s all sorts of freaky people in the world…you just had the bad luck of meeting a couple of them.

      Oconto...the birthplace of western civilization:)

Yowza, Maybe they were up to other things they shouldn’t have been and you walked into their game? Can’t say we’ve ever had an experience quite like that, and hope we never do!

Another reason to leave the hockey mask at home 😯

Looks like one of them logged it with the wrong date. Interesting how interpretations of the same event can vary so widely.

I’ve met a fair number of cachers on the trail, most were met trying to be inconspicuous so the initial greeting was a bit reserved and nervous but once the common goal was realized its always been a positive event for me.

Who knew that a divorce advisor could cause so much trouble geocaching? You are a naughty, naughty boy! 😈

      #1910590

      Seriously? 😯

I’m very disappointed in this whole thing. I can’t believe there are people out there as part of this game that are like that. I wonder how they would have reacted if your family came along? Then they couldn’t have said you chased them into the woods.

And, I thought the saying was Cache in Trash OUT! 😆

Had their log been actually what really occurred and the one overly aggressive cacher actually did say nicely that they wished for their group to have a special moment then my log of the incident certainly would not have been as it was. I certainly can respect wishes, even said in the aggressive manner that it was, however I guess I should have actually left the woods. 30 yards is 90 feet, my gps must have been way off at about 75 yards or 225 feet. At least they decided to actually communicate via their real cacher name rather than hide and attack from afar. Please be wary of this group they need many special moments together.

What surprises me about this group is the 4 caches they have logged. Besides the 3/3 that your tale is about they claim to have found S/S’s Lookout Above I / Remnants which I almost had a heart attack climbing to. They also claim to have found Lateral Thinking which is one of the harder caches in Milwaukee County. I guess I shouldn’t badmouth someone I’ve never met. I just hope I don’t cross their path when we go to Oconto County in a week.

they need many special moments together.

sounds like my young kids who want “special time with mom or dad”…

the expectation that you will/should not share a geocache hunt is unrealistic…

I have never run into this. Everyone I run into is cordial and respectful. Good luck I just guess.

I was chased out of a park by a perverted “cruiser” once though. He figured the only reason I was in the park was to pick up another guy… I didn’t stick around to tell him the finer aspects of geocaching.

      can’t imagine why!?! 😆

The last time I said something less than flattering about a Geocache team I didn’t know and figured they would never hear about it, I was picked on for almost a year. 🙄

I saw the log last night when I logged into the neighborhood Internet network/Motel. 😳 I was hoping to see that teams log online, but I see that’s not going to happen.

I have never had a bad encounter in the field with another geocacher.
