Is anyone using an Explorist and having or had issues downloading the software for Driver for the USB???
Mine says it can’t recognize the compatability with Windows XP.

One thing to try is to make sure you are following the correct “order of operations” when attaching the gps to your pc-
1. With your eXplorist turned off, connect your USB/Data cable to your PC.
2. Connect the USB connector to the back of your GPS.
3. Turn On the GPS.The gps should start up and then go into Communications Mode once it detects connection to the PC. If the unit doesn’t go into File Transfer Mode automatically, select File Transfer Mode on the communications screen.
The unit will take several seconds to connect to your PC in file transfer mode and should display the units file folder.

For the Fu, I would travel around the globe just like Ferdinand Magellan.
Actually, I had problems with the eXplorist and the USB driver while doing the GPS downloads at the All-A-Glow event in the fall. Eventually I got it working, but it seemed kind of flaky. (But I’m a Garmin guy and all this Magellan stuff appears Greek (or is it French?) to me. :))
One thing you might want to do is pull the SD card out of the unit (I’m assuming you have a card and are not downloading to internal memory), plug it into a USB flash card reader (like this), and download waypoint files directly to the card. That way, you wouldn’t have to bother getting the GPS itself to connect to your PC, which seems to be the source of most of the problems (at least it was for me).
01/04/2007 at 3:37 am #1767803I can’t download anything because I get a an error msg on the computer, when I attacht the USB cord to the GPS, stating the computer can’t recognize the hardware. I can’t get the driver program to download…it fails, stating it can’t varify the Windows Logo…. What the Heck does THAT mean?????
Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!!!!!
01/04/2007 at 3:50 am #1767804Did a little research. According to their website, the driver is not required for this unit. With no driver, the GPS should act like a normal USB flashdrive. The driver is only required if you want to use a serial port instead of USB.
Anyway, this means that your PC should connect to the GPS when you plug it in, even if you install no software at all. Try plugging it in, and then after your PC links up, see if it shows up as a drive on the “my computer”. If not, repeat the process on a different computer. If it still doesn’t work, your GPS is probably defective or otherwise broken.
01/04/2007 at 8:22 pm #1767805Another thing to look at is which way you are hooking up the cable. I no longer own an explorist but if I remember the plug on the back of the gps looks like it hooks up one way but it actually hooks up the other way.
maybe someone with an explorist can chime in and say which way it hooks up….. cable down the body of the gps or cable up.EDIT: I think the cable goes down

Good reminder- I screwed that up when I first got an explorist. I was used to my Gamin, which the cable is UP on the unit. The explorist cable can be mounted facing up, which is wrong and will not work.
