I ran a query of all WI ECs and holy cow have we even had an explosion of new listings! If you haven’t noticed run a query and select ECs only and see for yourself. I wonder if this trend is also happening elsewhere?
I also wonder if GC is beginning to question their decision to reinstate Earthcaches (based on their apparent dislike for container-less locations like virtuals)…
Hopefully they don’t have an issue! Since it IS a joint effort with the Geology Society, maybe they are kewl with it. I think with the educational aspect of it, things should be ok.
I know that may of the locationless and virutals were Historical and Educational. As long as Earthcaches stay within the standards they put forth, things should go well.
I wonder if geoaware might not start putting some stipulations on the number of certain types of Earthcaches in a state, etc.
I think the explosion is happening all over. I’ve had a pocket query set up for over a year where I got all earthcaches within 500 miles, or 500 earthcaches, whichever came first. Up until a few months ago I’d hit the 500 miles long before the 500 caches. Now I hit 500 earthcaches first, and the number of miles out to reach that is shrinking fast.
I, too, hope that GC.com doesn’t get upset with the larger number being created, but as long as they stay educational, and the regular reviewers don’t have to determine the “wow” factor, I don’t think it will be a problem.
I’ve noticed this in Minnesota as well. As to the number of times any given feature should be, well, featured, here’s my take…..
I know that quality should rate high, and hope that the ones we’ve placed meet that standard. We surely put a lot of work into them (although really, if you don’t canoe our first one, it’s kind of a dud!), but here’s the deal….
Not all geocachers are willing to travel to the ends of the earth for an earthcache. It’s true! And each example of any given feature does have its own uniqueness, too. Especially with gas prices doing what they’ve been doing, having the option of visiting a spring near Waukesha or one over by Knapp still gives those cachers who “cache local” a chance to visit these special caches without mortgaging the ranch to finance their trips.
The virtuals we’ve visited have usually been to interesting locales, too. It’s too bad they were stopped, but that happened before our time, so I don’t know all the controversy with those.
To address the repeat feature issue, I have two (hopefully soon to be three) Lime kiln caches (one Team Hemi and I put together with Jim being the actual owner). One of these ECs is in Iowa and stays mainly on the topic of the kilns themselves and how they work. The two in Wisconsin have differing main topics while sharing basic information; one highlights the early Wisconsin lime trade, one emphasizes the stone more and includes information on the Niagara escarpment.
Repeats are not a bad thing but to keep things fresh I hope differing information can be written to keep people learning new things and to keep travelers traveling.

I agree with you whole heartedly on that. Keeping it fresh is the key. Having interesting and different facts about each similar one without grabbing for straws though.
Well, with Passing Wind moving to Northern Wi, there is already some new ones in upper Wi and Min. I think he has a few more planned.
Just submitted another one. FINALLY!! LOL Hope it will be approved soon! I did have problems with the Pictures portion. I got an error message.
We can’t WAIT to get up to the Penokee Range and do Passing Wind’s “St. Peters Dome” cache. Darn work! It’s going to get in the way awhile longer!
Anne, hope your new one pops up before we do our final DeLorme run over that way, too!

The one I just submitted is in Dodge Co. but I just sent out the info to reopen my Two Creeks Buried Forest Earthcache which is in a SNA.
