anyone ever find a way to export a route from delorme street atlas, push into either google earth or better yet right to gc.com and get caches along it?

I don’t have that program loaded right now, but I believe you can export a GPX file from Delorme. As long as you specify to export the track, it should work on gc.com.

There isn’t a direct GPX output from Delorme SA.
I played around last night and came up with a solution, but it involves about four different programs to finally get caches along a route. I have an idea for an easier way and I’ll post it as soon as I know more.

Ok! Got it! Assuming you already have your route in SA…
    1. Click on the DRAW tab in SA.
    2. Click the NEW button and select DRAW. If you don’t see the NEW button, click on FILE in the lower left part of the screen.
    3. A new Draw layer should appear in the list. Rename it if you want to.
Make sure your new Draw layer is selected as “active”.
    4. Right Click on the route and select MANAGE DRAW and then COPY TO ACTIVE DRAW LAYER.
    5. Click on the SAVE button. The file should be in C:Delorme DocsDraw by default, and will have a .an1 extension. Something like Drawlayer2.an1.

So far, this sounds like a lot of steps, but it only takes about ten seconds to do.

    6. If you have GSAK then GPSBabel will be in the GSAK directory. Otherwise, you’ll have to find it and change the directory in the following command line. You will probably want to make a batch file for this…

    c:gsakgpsbabel -r -i an1 -f DrawLayer4.an1 -o kml -F DL2.kml

Browse to http://www.geocaching.com/my/userroutes.aspx#upload and upload the .kml file you just created. Keep in mind the 500 point/500 mile limit.

I used Delorme Topo USA, but SA has the same functionality.

    Dang brian!

I actually found most of that path and wound up being able to save as gpx straight out of SA but haven’t had time to upload to gc and see what comes back yet.

Will update when I get there.

    thanks!

Ok, I did finally figure it out but there is one caveat. You need to put in a lot of stops in along your route to keep it on the roads you want to run.

If you don’t, gc.com will just make a straight line between the points when you upload the gpx file. For instance my route in delorme took me from wausau down through marshfield then to osseo, but I didnt have a stop at marshfield, just a “via”.

Gc.com created a straight cross country line from wausau to osseo when I uploaded it.

    To get it done:

    1. Create your route, make sure you put plenty of “stops” in
    2. Click on the Route tab
    3. Click on the new/edit button
    4. Click on the File button and select export.
    5. It came up defaulted to gpx for me, I selected the save location, typed in a name and it was ready to go.

Yep… your way just routes cache to cache in a straight line, but saves having to convert the .an1 file with gpsbabel. The way I described gives a route that follows the roads.

I never thought about exporting a route from Delorme to use in the GC.com caches along a route app. After putting the gpsbabel command in a batch file, it’s the quickest and easiest way I’ve seen to do it.

    Planning a trip, Mike? Need a co-pilot?

Did fine! We made it all over the SW part of the state and all the way back to Wausau without any troubles. Ok, there are two pesky counties we missed, but THB/ZUMA’s event is in one of those, and only 20 miles from the other one.
