I plant to tackle that mountain seen in the event picture. Woofta!
That mountain is Roche-A-Cri Mound, the highlight of the park. There is a 303-step stairway to the top of it, and an observation deck on the north end. The rest of the mound is state natural area and closed to human travel. You could get a ticket if you go off the stairway or walkway.
The start of the stairway is right across the road from the shelter where the picnic will be held. Some of the steps have fallen into disrepair and have had to be replaced. Still very useable. The stairway will undergo renovation in 2011.
There are two landing areas on the stairway for those who don’t want to go all the way up or to get different views from different areas. The only ones who will not be able to make it up the stairway are those confined to wheel chairs. Go at your own pace, and you’ll make it. If we can do it, anyone can! Excellent views and a great experience.
The photo on the event page was taken from Friendship Mound to the south. There is a fire tower on top of that one, and there used to be a downhill ski area (Skyline). Most of that mound is privately owned with no access.
FYI

remind anyone of this?
05/26/2010 at 3:33 am #1926537If there’s ever an anthrax scare in Adams-Friendship I’m totally headed for Roche-A-Cri Mound! 😉
05/26/2010 at 3:38 am #1926538It’s just you, TBC. 🙄 🙄 🙄
And Richard Dreyfus would have gotten a ticket for climbing up there to get a closer look.
And the aliens did not have DNR permission to land there!05/26/2010 at 4:56 am #1926539I might be off the rocker, but they could have been looking for a Geocache. I bet it was a DNF. Goofy aliens have eyes on the tops of their heads, can’t see the ground. Or at least that is what my alien buddy told me over my tinfoil head antenna.
Yep, off rocker a bit. Perhaps my last two DNF’s got to me more than I had realized.
05/26/2010 at 1:39 pm #1926541I think the date sounds great. I’ts good to be consistent. There will ALWAYS be SOMETHING going on that conflicts so the 18th sounds as good as any. Got it on the calendar and hope to make it! I too have some more work to do in that park 🙂 Didn’t even get to climb the mound last time so gotta go back for that right? 🙂
05/26/2010 at 2:08 pm #1926542Maybe some stair climbing relay races….. its easy, only 303 steps 😆
Disclaimer : Always answering to a higher power.
05/26/2010 at 3:02 pm #1926545As someone born and raised in Colorado, I find you all referring to this bump as a “mountain” quite insulting to my beloved mountains. 😛
That being said, I’ve gotten fat and lazy with all the beer and sausage eating that one must do in this state, so I could see where climbing that HILL would seem like a mountain…

People climb Devil’s Tower all the time. I’ve been to the top three times. It was less than an hour drive from my Uncle’s Ranch back in my climbing days.
05/27/2010 at 12:03 am #1926547But climbing Roche-A-Cri will get you a ticket, whether you are Richard Dreyfus or not. 😉
And we love those Colorado mountains!
05/27/2010 at 3:17 am #1926549Not going to Roche A Cri. Green Bay Packer home football game weekend.
And yeah, DJ, I know it’s a short drive..but still gonna stay home anyways.
06/05/2010 at 1:08 pm #1926550Does anyone know the GC number for this event? The WGA page says its registration link is not working and to register on GC.com. Several keyword searches have not led me to the page. Thanks.

There isn’t a GC number or a cache page for this event yet. There is an event page on the WGA site here–click on the events link to the left to see the WGA picnic page. There is also an official spot on the page to register for the picnic (no has registered yet, though). If it’s like in the past, the WGA would like you to officially register here instead of with an “attend” log on the GC page, although you are free to post there, too, when it becomes available.
06/05/2010 at 1:40 pm #1926552Just checked out the WGA site and see that the registration link isn’t working. Still plenty of time left, though. The WGA page shows all that is planned for the picnic event.
06/05/2010 at 11:30 pm #1926553Found it while looking for other Roche-a-Cri caches. The GC code is GC29P5H
06/06/2010 at 12:13 am #1926554Yep. It was just published a few hours ago.
