I think they don’t take reservations at RAC for after Labor Day because there is never much demand for sites after then. Of the 25 sites available, the most we have seen occupied on a weekend after Labor Day was maybe 8-10. All 41 sites fill up for the three summer holiday weekend, and maybe a couple of weekends in July.
I would think that if the campground starts to fill up, it would be mostly with geocachers from the picnic. Maybe we could get an idea beforehand of how many want to camp, and let the park know if they need to reopen the second loop fur us.
Camping is rustic there, vault toilets, no showers, no electricity (except on the handicapped site). All the sites are wooded with plenty of room. Campfire ring, picnic table, and an adirondack bench at each site. No pull-through sites. There is a dumping station for trailers, and you can buy firewood at the office.

The Friends group will also assist with shuttling people from the winter parking area as there is not a huge amount of available parking.
We missed the Friends meeting this month, but they’ve done shuttles for the Haunted Hayride every year, so they know what they’re doing. That being said, the winter parking area is only a half a mile from the shelter. Cachers can drive right up to the shelter, drop off passengers and gear, then drive to the winter parking lot and walk in, if needs be. Good way to pick up the caches at that end of the park, too. There are other parking areas along the park road, too. Same thing: drop off your stuff, park, walk back.
06/21/2010 at 2:15 am #1926572We also plan on camping for the weekend. If it is color season there could be other campers, but this might be a couple weeks early. Nice park to camp in….look forward to seeing you there.

Just informed that the staircase to the top of the Roche-a-Cri mound have been closed. Apparently they have been deemed unsafe and will be replaced hopefully by next year some time.
Is this confirmed? If so the EarthCaches need to be looked at requirement-wise…
the Grotesque Towers Earthcache has been archived.
From what I’m told, that is unrelated to the stairs….Lagrac has his own reasons…but you are right that is the only EC requiring (optionally) to go to the top.
I stand corrected. The archive may in fact be related to the stair issue.
07/12/2010 at 12:02 am #1926574I cached with lagrac this weekend and he said the EC was archived after park officials requested it be shut down; and it in fact was solely due to the situation with the stairs. Brett said he was told at the time that they would be closed down indefinitely, so this was a better way to handle it than to just disable it and leave it sit.
07/21/2010 at 1:49 pm #1926575Can I camp with my pop-up camper at the park or are the sites tent-only? Are there private campgrounds next to the park? 😀
Oconto...the birthplace of western civilization:)

on the Reserve America site for Roche-a-Cri, there looks to be only two “tent-only” sites so all the other sites are for RV, Tent, Trailers.
So, how many can we put you down for???? 😀

08/02/2010 at 7:02 pm #1926580Anyone know what the status is on campsites? It would be nice to camp if I can get the doc’s ok.

Decrepit are you asking regarding availability? I don’t believe that we have had so many confirmed campers yet that they will need to open the other loop so I would imagine that as far as sites available (while they are not reservable) they are not all filled. I will have to look back through all the posts to see the number of cachers camping.

08/02/2010 at 8:32 pm #1926582That’s good. I’ll just have to start working on the doc’s now. I might just be able to convince them that I’m not going to drop dead in the woods. 😆
08/02/2010 at 8:56 pm #1926583Add AstroD to the list of campers!!! Decided to tent it after all.
08/03/2010 at 2:49 am #1926584No problem with camping spots yet.
