Hi, I’d like to know what was your favorite cache and why was it your favorite?
Please note: my comments are mine alone and may not necessarily reflect an official stance of the WGA Board of Directors.
01/28/2017 at 8:42 am #2053416Thank you for the question. I personally don’t have one favorite cache but one of my favorite caching experience when I went down with some fellow cachers and we did the whitewater canyon area in Iowa. It involved pouring rain, mud crossing a river and climbing a very steep and wet cliff (mountain). I enjoy personally the higher harder difficulty caches but if we are caching with family we have to do the easier ones.
All opinions, comments, and useless drivel I post are mine alone and do not reflect the opinions of the WGA BOD.
01/28/2017 at 9:03 am #2053417The first thing I did when I read this question was jump on my geocaching profile and look at my favorite list. I got about halfway through the 350+ caches on that list, and I realized that there isn’t just one cache I can say is my absolute favorite. It sort of felt like deciding on one in particular was ignoring the dozen or so other caches that are truly memorable to me. There in fact are a lot of caches on that list that I can say are my absolute favorites, but for different reasons.
The first one that caught my eye was The Old Man | Takes Shelter (GC12FFY). I can’t tell you how many times we wandered around looking and cursing S|S. It took a little nudge from our caching mentors, but we made the find. I have to say it made the favorite list because not only did it make us think outside of the box for the first time caching, it also showed us that sometimes we are going to have to step outside our comfort zone to make a find.
Another that made me want to name it as a favorite was Holly Shrine (GC6780). I don’t want to say too much about this one, since I think it is a cache that everyone should visit if they have the opportunity. I know you can just check our the cache page gallery, but standing on that spot is a completely different experience. I would never have thought standing in the middle of a corn field could make me feel all the emotions I did.
Finally, as to not make this a terribly long post, my favorite for its amazing scenery and the fact that hundreds if not thousands of people a day pass by and don’t even know this is there, is Cut River Cantilever (GCA89C). I have to admit, I drove over this bridge at least a dozen times before geocaching, and I never knew the truth. It made me see that some of the most beautiful things in this world can be hidden in plain sight, we just have to look for them.
I could go on and on about the caches that are my true favorites, but as you can see, they all have different reasons for being favorites. That is one of the greatest thing about geocaching, no matter what, if you look hard enough, you can find so many amazing caches that it is impossible to pick just one favorite.
My posts should in no way be considered as the views or opinions of the WGA or its Board of Directors. All posts made under my name are my personal opinions only.
01/28/2017 at 3:07 pm #2053419I have a toss up between Vampire Empire and Out of Site. These two caches were very well thought out. They weren’t just a park and grab but a cache that made you think, hike, and explore. Both caches were different experiences. Vampire Empire was a family trip (my wife, the kids, and myself) ventured the downtown Chicago to some this fun experience. Out of Site was a cache that put blisters on your feet, and a puzzle at every weigh point. I headed out with a group of top notch puzzle solvers and we all finished the cache as a team. Everyone became part of that fun adventure.
01/29/2017 at 2:12 pm #2053438Although it has been many years since we found this cache, it still is one of my highlights .. “I Love Chicago – Reflecting Pond (GSMDBY)”. It was my 1,300 milestone cache and I was with our Girl’s Day Out Team” or “GDO” crew. The cache was located on the grounds of a Chicago Museum and dedicated to our crew. The hide itself was totally illegal and was quickly archived a short time later. For me there were 2 things that make this one of my favorites, the first has to be the team work we exhibited to make the find and the second has to be the location. BQueen had to take off her winter boots, climb on our backs to get up to the balcony to retrieve the cache container. I used my hiking sticks to hand up her boots so she wasn’t standing in her socks in the snow. I have such memories of us laughing and saying “it seriously cannot be there, or is it”. The location because I later found out that my Dad nearly drown in that very pond as a child. He and his brother were playing on the ice and fell through. They managed to pull each other out and had the cold walk home totally soaked that they developed hypothermia. It was somewhat serendipity that I had a cache hidden in our honor at that very spot.
01/30/2017 at 7:50 am #2053464I knew that this would be a hard question to answer, as I have found so many great caches. For me, it not just the cache itself, but also the events that happen, the places/things I see, and the people I may be with. I could not narrow it down to one, but I have 6 that have really stood out to me, and remind me why I really enjoy geocaching. (Not in any particular order).
GC5XXN6 – 1538 Sharknado Ate – This cache had me laughing out loud. It was raining pretty good when I found this cache, and the laughs made it all worth it.
GC9E5E – Dr. Evermore & Lady Eleanor – This cache took me to an interesting place, that I probably would not have visited otherwise. We had a lot of fun wandering around, taking photos and checking everything out.
GC3GHDV – Pezzo/G1 Amazing Race – This cache had me stumped for quite a while. I was with a friend who I was showing what geocaching was. I was fairly new myself, and I won’t even say how long we were there, but it was pure triumph when I made the tricky find.
GCJ3MM – Snake Bite – As I mentioned in another post, I enjoy the long hikes to find caches. This was a perfect example of it. Creative WP’s, and a beautiful fall day. I had a lot of fun tracking this one down.
GC5JBCW – Trebuchet – This is such a creative cache. I brought my father out to do this one with me, and we had so much fun with it. We were both amazed at the time and effort that was put into this one, and I love the creativity!
GC9178 – Glow In the Dark – This was my very first time doing a night time cache. I went with a group of other cachers, and while it was again pouring, we had a really good time. We almost missed the cache itself, but thankfully someone was able to “kick” it up. Lots of laughs were had here, and that again is why I enjoy caching.
