I posted this in the help forum and don’t know how to move it, so I’m posting here, too…….

We’re getting nigh on close to a Major Milestone and I was reviewing the caches people were recommending for natloh when he was approaching an even bigger milestone, because we seem to have similar tastes.
Is this one that would still be fun in late fall/early winter weather? We want to find something we can do within a day’s drive to and from (no overnights). I’d thought at first of doing the Crex Meadows ones to end up at that milestone, but I want to save that series for next spring when the birds come back. Canoe caches are pretty much out of the question right now, or those would be fun.

So…Felsenmeer Ridge sounds promising, but if others can suggest caches in remote locations, with some level of terrain challenge—we don’t do scuba 5s!–and possibility of cool wildlife sightings–bring ’em on!

      Tough terrain you say?

Match Head is in Racine, and has difficult terrain, and wonderful views. At this time of year, eaither bundle up, or wait for winds from the west. Many, many, many milestones have been achieved here. HOT TROT hit 1000 there yesterday.

If there is enough snow on the ground, Felsenmeer would be great during the winter, since it is just off of a cross country ski trail. It was a long walk, but it would be a tad easier on skis. It is a ground hide, but unless there is 2 feet of snow, should find it pretty easily cuz it is hard to miss a pile of rocks next to a tree. The cache is not about the hide at all. It is about the view, and the walk getting back there.

I would highly recommend doing the Felsenmeer Ridge cache in late Fall or early winter as the trails can get a little overgrown in the Summer. Someone even snowshoed in and found without trouble, although, like Zuma said it is a ground hide so be aware of that if there is substantial snow. Plus, when the leaves are down the view is even that much better!
Plus no heat, humidity, ticks or bugs!

Geologically, the felsenmeers are pretty unique and there is another felsenmeer cache about a mile away that sounds pretty neat, too. I think Jack Pine Savage hid that one(?)

If you go, the 2 Pipestone caches are on the way, so hit those too!

Lastly, I have plans to replace the container over the weekend of Dec. 1st. Apparently the lid of the lock-and-lock is busted so everything is wet 🙁

If you choose this one, have fun and enjoy the view!
