This has been bothering me for a while now, and I’ve finally gotten the stones to voice my opinion, for whatever its worth….
I know this is a source of endless debate at many geocaching groups, but why claim a find on a cache that is obviously not there?

The Gladiator is what is getting in my craw. It seems a controlled burn has destroyed the cache container, although the waypoint marker still exists. Yet people are still claiming finds.

It’s none of my busines what anyone does, but this bugs me A LOT. I could very easily make the trek out to the tag, but there’s no way I would claim a find for this. For me, log equals find. In absence of a log, an email to the cache owner would be the only thing that would lead to my logging the find.

I don’t know if Artropsy is still around. I’ve heard this was a great cache. Should I be the spoil sport and put a SBA on it, or just shut up and mind my own business?

i saw that one, too, as well as a few others….and i agree with you. that is something that really bothers me. you can let this fester inside of you, you can let it go, or you can do something within your power about it. if it would make you feel better about it, then put an sba on it. it would be a very constructive response.

rest assured, you’re not alone. the very same thing bugs me, too. people who log a find twice (or more) on a cache bothers me too. for example, someone finds a cache themselves, and then later (days, months, whatever), logs that they were out with their daughter and she found it…….but it’s under the username who already logged a find.

Well, in my own humble opinion, “You have to cross about 70 yards of low, marshy, potentially wet terrain to get to cache site…” sounds icky. LOL.

I guess if it were me, I’d at least make an attempt to find the cache before posting the “Should Be Archived”. And/or make an attempt at contacting the cache owner thru the profile….

But if someone has already done that, I hope they will share here!

I’m glad you’ve *gotten the stones* to speak up. (Do ya feel the *RUSH*?? LOL.)

I know how you’re feeling – you’re sorta feeling like folks are “cheating” on the game. The way I keep from feeling that way is that I just try to look at it as an *individual* game – I’m not “against” anyone. It’s just me and the cache. I guess a good comparision would be golf. You’re just out trying to get your best score and to have a lot of fun. Some folks spend all sorts of $$ on fancy clubs that supposedly help you hit your ball farther or golfballs that supposedly fly farther, and even though it’s not *illegal*, it just doesn’t feel right to everyone to do it that way, even though some folks aren’t bothered by it. (I sure hope that makes sense…. That was one BIG run on sentence, lol.)

    Anyhoo…. That’s my 2¢.

For me: signed log = find. The only exception I’ve had was when the container was frozen so solidly in ice, I couldn’t free it for the life of me. I took a picture of it with my sig item next to it and sent it to the cachemeister. He OKed the smilie.

Finding just the first part of a multi doesn’t equal a find in my book. When people do that, I roll my eyes and try to forget it. I also do that when people log smilies instead of notes on their own caches.

As for the Gladiator, I’ll put this offer out to anyone who’s found it and is willing to go back. I will supply a stocked ammo can to replace the missing container if someone can put it where it belongs…so we can go find it! I’m not going out there until it freezes again tho.

I’ve seen the same thing in my area. Someone came through a couple days ago and logged a few, especially Whistler Mounds, that I’ve wanted to do. They said they “knew” where they were supposed to be. Not fair play in my book. Now a question. We did Metamorphosis in Appleton. A quasi-virtual. Gizfinder gave us credit and we logged it. We had found it but didn’t turn it over. If we went back for the final reveal it would take 5 seconds. Literally. So is this kosher? I’ll do it anyway for my peace of mind, but what if I was out of state. Where do the lines blur or do they?

It’s really a personal thing, but I just had to say something (also it was a nice diversion from my project for school).

Actually, I emailed the cache owner and he was willing to change the tag to the find. But, Team LightningBugs, I mentioned your offer and he thought that would be great!!
