We’ve done a little caching in this area already. I have two storytelling gigs on the 22nd at UW-Fox Valley, one over the lunch hour and one in the evening. I can’t get real dirty, obviously. So, can you suggest a few “can’t miss” caches in the area that a person who needs to remain looking somewhat decent might want to find? I’m game to do a puzzle or two (which is why I’m asking now), but nothing taxing. That Sinister one has been giving me fits! Multis are fine, as long as they don’t have me driving all over town. This isn’t about getting numbers. I want to see the cool places or hides. I’ve already slated in seldom’s new earthcache, and have a couple solved puzzles I want to find. We’ve done Metamorphosis.

The tentative plan is to stay at at B & B in Black Creek, so I can amble home the long way via Green Bay to nab letterboxes and whatever else I think I need (like maybe FINALLY getting Pirate Pete’s Plunder!) Thanks for any tips. I realize in asking this that of course, ALL the caches are can’t miss! 😉

marc’s evil ones are the only ones worth doing up here? Really? What else?

I guess I was waiting for the Appleton people to comment, since I have not done em all in the Fox Valley, but I have done quite a few of em. Here are a few suugestions:

GCZCQH Real Gone/Hoist That Rag. Fun multi and the second waypoint is the kind of adventure that Dick craves, and Gwyn can watch.

GC11HWM Old Man/Snagged His Tackle. Nice location and a fund hide, and again a bit of an adventure, considering it is an urban hide.

GCNA82 Metamorphosis. Easy one for cache vets like you, but a former COTM winner.

GCZTFJ Consult the Oracle. An easy one, with a different twist.

GC110B9 Seldom Spotted/Sneaky Small. A well done quick multi, but only quick if ya find the well hidden first stage.

GCR69X 12 Creepy Grottos WSQ. One of the most interesting cemetary cachess in the state. Very cool.

GCR69X Moonlighting For Cache – A fun night cache.

GC179FP Wiowash Waters – Nice walk, easy find, and there are severl others caches along tihis part of the trail.

GC179FP Evil Monkey Goes Tree Top Flying. Nice spot and a good fun hide.

In addition, there are lots of park and logs all over Appleton, so I would head for these ones mentioned above that are interesting, and get the park and logs that happen to be along the way.

Here are three that we liked that I can think of off the top of my head.

Outagamie Co Insane Asylum – just plain weird and in a weird location too! GCPYA4

If you like travel bugs, this is great and keeps ya clean. Just Visiting TB Hotel GC116D7

I liked this one for all the neat artwork and stuff to look at as well as the scenic view of the river. The pub across the street is pretty good too! 😛 GC162P7 = A Dam Tender Spot

Looks like I need to get back up to Appleton, lots of new ones since the last time I was there! 😀

Since I’m from appleton I will speak up and help out a fellow cacher… (note for clarification: these are NOT all in Appleton, but as many cachers from outside the Appleton area think all of the cities and towns in the Valley are “Appleton”, I have included some that are in surrounding communities as well 🙂

GC1F8MF – Chronicles | You Turn Me On – If I had my choice on one “night cache” in appleton, it would be this one. I might be a bit biased but you will not be let down by the recommendation.

GC1C9JB – PUC | I’ll Come Bouncing Back is much fun. and while you’re in the park… GC1CT2N PUC | Grubby Little Fingers. There’s one more at the front of this park, one more at the back of this park and another puzzle there too but I can’t tell you which one 😉

If you’re headed downtown to do Metamorphosis & the Oracle you might want to stop and try:
GC15QC3 – Flags of Our Fathers | Land, Sea & Sky
GC1693Q – Pace Yourself, Man! – I just recently did this one with my son and we had a blast.

GCPDBP – My Best Friend…Where is she? – If you have not done this classic, it will bring a smile when you find it.

            GC10NZZ – Ahoy, I Zeeland

GC1ACTZ – Thanks! – If you want an easy puzzle to cross off the list, I would have to say this is one of the easiest. Oh and it’s mine..

GC15QPG – Flags of Our Fathers | Isle of Valor – Definitely worth a visit if you haven’t seen this yet. Oh and there’s another cache on the “Isle” that someone I know placed…

GCVDYE – Gilligan’s Island – My son’s favorite cache but you might have an anti-climactic experience with it being so dry lately. There are other notables in walking distance of this one as well.

            GC16T5Z – And On The First Day…

GCWT2K – Dead End: Hog Heaven – After you find it, check out the picture in my log and laugh.

And you can’t go wrong finding any of the “Trail of the Serpent” series caches by Sloughfoot.

I’ll stay north of Neenah and end my list there…

Yeah, there’s a bunch of easy park and finds but there’s also a ton of diversity as well.

            Hope this helps!

Thanks everyone, these should keep me entertained. I did one of the Flags of our Fathers, I think, or at least I have it solved.

Ralph, with the Hoist that rag, Dick won’t be along, as I’m up there for a storytelling gig. Considering that I’m often the monkey of our team, would I be able to do this one solo? Adventures are always good!

I did it solo, and that is as much of a hint I can give without rightfully incur the righteous wrath of the cacheowner.

If Ralph can fit in there, your should be able to!

Hey, we tried this one in April (the last time we were in your area), and we couldn’t find it (we were at the right spot), AND I got creosote on the front of my shirt that never came out. I now wear the shirt to cache in where I expect to get dirty!

                    #1895733

now wear the shirt to cache in where I expect to get dirty!

so what your sayin’ is thanks for the dirty shirt? 8)

                    sorry, couldn’t help myself.

The “thanks” cache is what I would like to call a “simple pleasure” cache. If you like this type of easy puzzle, you should also look at my sweetest hide and richmond rockets. They all fit into the “puzzles that are easy with all the rules in front of you” category. All 3 of these mentioned are solveable with very little “work” on the cacher part but you might learn something. “Thanks” without the puzzle would be a boring dead end cache hide. Throw in the puzzle and content and it becomes just a bit more. Build a nice big sign nearby that fits in with the theme and you got a winner. 😀 (I didn’t really build the sign…)

I have a hard time recommending my own caches to others because I tend to hide the “park and ride” type caches and then on the other end the puzzle caches. I guess that’s my niche. Also, I don’t ever get to experience my own caches as a finder from the outside so it’s hard to say if they are recommendable or not… I think reading the logs on my caches is more fun than caching nowadays.

Thanks to everyone for their suggestions! I had less time than I’d hoped, so I just got a few of the recommended caches—-this time. I actually enjoyed the Creepy Grottos, it probably helped that it was a nice, sunny afternoon! Also sat and sketched Consult the Oracle, fun twist. The “Best Friend” cache did indeed make me smile! We had already found Metamorphosis and Dam Tender Spot last summer and agree…those are fun ones to hunt.

I have a list now of others to hunt when travels take us there, plus a few solved puzzles I just never got to this time around, including cheetos’s “Thanks!”

I really wanted to try Hoist that Rag, but I was dressed in my nice storyteller clothes and had to be back for a 7PM show, so….another time!

Thanks for all the recommendations for some fun caches to pass the time.

Just a quick observation and moreover a response to a forum log suggesting that I archive some of mine to make space for new and better caches. Not trying to blow my horn here, but responding to that suggestive post.

Of the 24 recommendations listed in this thread as a list of “you should try these when you are in town”, 12 are mine. That’s 50%.

There are 623 caches in a 10 mile radius of 54914. 104 of them are mine. That’s about 17%. If half of the recommendations are for a cacher with about a sixth of the local caches (and that number goes down the further out you go) I’d say I’ve got some good caches in the field that have merit and are worth keeping active vs pulling a bunch to make room for some P&R hides.
