Can anyone tell me what to do when I find a cache that has a full log book?? If I have paper or a small notebook that would fit in the cache I would replace it. But would I just leave the old log book there in the cache as well??? Take it with me to be disposed of correctly?? Please let me know.
Thanks

04/05/2008 at 5:12 pm #1887505That’s a decent question. I’ve often wondered what to do with an old log book myself, particularly if there’s not room for both.
04/05/2008 at 5:55 pm #1887506It’s very nice if you are able to have a spare notebook with you and replace a full one. However, please don’t remove the full log book from the cache. The owners may want to retrieve it and keep/read it.

Well you gotta use your judgment. But since the cache belongs to the cache owner the cache owner should decide, and be responsible for, what happens to the log book over time.
I can’t think of too many instances where there wouldn’t be room to put in another piece of paper temporarily, or where you couldn’t find some spot on the log book somewhere to note your initials and a date, except perhaps a nano-scroll. Then note in your online log that the book is full and/or email the owner.
Again, I would never, as a rule, take a log book out of a cache. We’ve been to caches that have had multiple “legacy” log books in them and we enjoy reading some of the logs and history of the cache.

You can even post a “needs maintenance” log to the cache page if you feel it’s necessary.
I enjoy reading my log-books after replacing them, and I keep them all.

04/06/2008 at 11:09 pm #1887512I do not keep any of the old paper logs. (What’s the on line logs for?)
I throw all the full, wet, etc logs ways. Anyone finding such in any of my caches is free to do the same.
04/06/2008 at 11:42 pm #1887513I know it’s rare of me to disagree with you Marc 😉 but a lot of times the paper logs are different or more detailed than the online logs. In-field notes can be fresher etc. So don’t throw gotta run’s books away!
On the Left Side of the Road...04/07/2008 at 3:49 am #1887514I agree with Marc (which doesn’t happen very often 😳 ). If you ever replace an ecoranger’s log/book/sheet etc. take the old one with you! Tami
