Too cold for caching, I can’t even believe the guys stood outside in those frigid temps to brew!  In a few weeks we’ll get to enjoy the stuff they brewed.

We have a beer making kit and we still need to actually use it.

I use to have one but I gave it to a beer drinking fan.  It should have been a rum making kit, I would use that.

I also have a kit to make your own button mushrooms, I’ve been to scared to try it.  Wonder how long the spore lasts?

Dare I say it, walk down a trail… I mean no phone or GPS or even printed off sheet from geocaching.com to look for a cache, I mean hiking with no caching haha…. Probably sad to say I don’t remember the last time I just went for a hike. I of course had to check for caches.

That’s actually something we enjoy doing. When we put out our caches, we pick places where a day’s hike to maintain them will be a pleasure. We’ve also begun a hiking challenge offered at the Kickapoo Valley Reserve to hike all 60+ miles of their trails this year. We’re hoping to do another segment or two this Saturday. It is just harder and harder after almost ten years of caching for us to find the nice hiking caches within a reasonable drive. We have adjusted our “cache thinking” and seek out things, caching or not, that drew us to the game in the first place.

And we’re venturing onto the fat tire bike trails, now that we have those toys to play with! 😀

Very often.  Although I do admit that I often carry the GPS just in case I explore far off the trail so as to find my way back or mark something to share with Mrs. Northwoods when I return with her in tow.  I’m fortunate enough to have a boatload of forest trails up north around the cottage to explore.

Right now is a good time here to look for shed antlers.  I’m rarely successful but who cares.

I had to google that one, bartrod. Looks like fun, though I myself would totally suck at it. Anything that requires me to use some sort of tool to connect with some flying object……bad news. I played on a tavern league softball team back in the day with the assurance that “we just play for fun, you don’t have to be any good.” I enjoy those games, but know I suck. Well…..they lied.

My game was racquetball or handball, alas that was back in the day of two good knees.  From there it went to badminton and then just hiking on the days my knee isn’t barking. 🙁

We visited Durward’s Glen again on Friday…there is a virtual and now an EarthCache there. I was curious about the retreat center there and went on their website when we got home. On July 9, they invite you to bring lawn chairs, a bottle of wine to enjoy the sounds of a bagpiper…homage to the Durward family’s heritage. If you’ve been there, you can imagine what a beautiful setting that would be!

Tonight we went to a Donkey Basketball game.  Absolutely hilarious!  I sure like geocaching but I haven’t laughed that hard in a long time.

Oh man, I haven’t been to one of those since I was like…college maybe? They used to have them in my hometown where there were generally some pro team members playing community people, like the mayor and city council. They were hilarious.

It was at our high school so it was Juniors, Seniors, Faculty and a team from our church which was a bunch of pastors and teachers.  Hilarious!

Birding is always a great excuse to explore outdoors without a GPSr. I was out all around the “lake” in town yesterday and actually spotted a pretty rare bird for our area. I haven’t been able to start a hotline bird in over three years. I was feeling pretty smug, until my rocket scientist brother emailed us an editorial cartoon that was in some major newspapers featuring his lab by name.

    Oh well.

Gwyn, I had hoped I’d see you at the campout to tell you that I saw the most beautiful little bird at the Scuppernong springs.  It was bright blue and of course it was a tease and wanted me to see it but not take it’s picture.  I think it must have been an indigo bunting, but couldn’t tell for sure.  I haven’t been a birder but I could see how one day I could take that up.

Sounds like an Indigo Bunting, they are just gorgeous when the light hits them right.

We have backed WAY off of caching these days, for various reasons. We couldn’t do the campout because that’s when we were holding our rummage sale. But one of the big eye openers was when we got our new car this week. Our trade in vehicle, bought about a year after we started caching, had close to 250,000 miles on it. Not all of that came from running all over looking for boxes, but a lot of it did. And those miles didn’t typically come from traveling to new places, other than one trip to Colorado Springs. We really have enjoyed returning to other interests and not feeling our leisure time being dominated by ‘where should we go cache this weekend?’ Our monthly fuel bills these days are close to 1/3 what they were last year. Some due to drop in price per gallon, but that just accounts for a little of the total.
