Funny L.O.E. Story

I decided to go caching after work this past Wednsday before the snow storm. I was in Sussex and was doing cache GC34E64. It was a nice night out quiet and cold the wind was just starting to pick up so you could hear the gust before it hit you. It was kind of weird you could hear a dog bark and it seemed like it was 10 miles away. So I look at the cache page and then grab my trusty flashlight. I hoppd out of the truck and turned it on it beemed bright white so I started walking to ground zero. As I got closer and closer I noticed my bright light was now turning yellow and then even more yellow. I said hey what the heck less lickley to have the cops called on me for some weird guy shinning a light in the trees and stuff. So I start searching adn searching and after about 10 mins I hear a car driving. It sounded so far away so I kind of ignored it. I kept looking and then all of a sudden I see a car drive up and then a huge bright light shines on my truck. I squint my eyes and see it is a squad car. I was like dang it. I kept in the shadows so he didnt see me I was like a kid playing ninja man so I just sat there and watched. He drove away I was so releaved to see that and I started to look again I then noticed he made a U-turn and parked right behind my truck. So I come out of the woods and started talking to him. After he blinded me with a 100,000,000,000 watt light and after I got done seeing stars we got to talking. He asked what was I hunting and I said a cache he then said Oh I thought you were hunting deer or something. he then asked me how much cash this cache had and I was like none they normally dont contain money. I started to describe geo caching and the likes I then went into my trusty cache bag and grabed a couple of the “all about Caching pamphlets” and gave them to him. (these are the ones i got form the cache bash like 2 years ago). he took them and said thanks he will hand them out to the other officers and then also post one up on the wall in the cop shop. he then said have fun he is going to get back into his car and get warm. So to finish my long story if you get a chance to grab or print some of the pamphlets out I would they make great stocking stuffers for L.O.E. (law enforcement officer). Oh by the way I didnt get the smily on this one and this was my first L.O.E. encounter. Better luck next time.

Good to know your experience with a LEO went well.

I will never forget my one bad experience that caused a whole neighborhood to be upset a couple years ago.

Then on the other side of the coin, I was looking for a night cache with my trusty flashlight in my hometown when a cop pulled up. I still was looking for the final firetacks. Cop asked me what I was doing. I told him I was geocaching. He asked if I found it. I said nope. He shined his flashlight in the general direction the cache would be, then drove away and I went back to look for it.

So all in all, I’ve experienced both sides in my encounters with LEOs – good and bad.

Cache #11 for my first encounter and my wife and children heard it all on the scanner as I was questioned about an arson situation.

Over here in Minnesota, we have OLE’s (Officers of Law Enforcement). I’ve heard of LEO’s (Law Enforcement Officers), but I guess LOE’s must be a Wisconsin thing.

Loved that pamphlet! Great work. Any idea if those have actually averted any bomb squad training sessions?

lol todd yes I cant take credit for calling them LEO i got the term from Chicago cachers. but it seems to fit here in Wisconsin. I used to have some printed versions if the police handouts but my cache pack got wet one day and everything ran and you couldnt read it or anything. so i use the pro version printed from the WGA and it basically explains caching really nice.
