Gander Mountain (Appleton) is totally on board with geocaching. Check out the updated description on GC1YQ4P. It states

01/20/2010 Due to the continued interest and the suggestions of several “Cachers”, Gander Mountain-Appleton will give a $10. “Gander Bucks” Card to all previous loggers and all subsequent finders. Just come in, go to the Service Desk, get your “Name” checked off and receive your card.

I saw in the logs that Sparse Grey Hackle made the suggesstion a few days (but there may be others as well). I think this is an awesome opportunity and something we all should be sure to “Thank You” for when picking up our gift.

Craphas! I almost found that one last weekend but ran out of time….

Here’s to hoping other Gander Mountain stores (like Wausau ;)) take note of this and do something similar.

You know when a store shows their GPS coordinates on their website that they’re a very GPS-friendly store

The Appleton Scheels sporting goods store also shows the coords on the home page….both of those stores are great.

I know the sporting goods department manager personally at Scheels. I’m going to take the “Gandering” printout and show him what his “competition” across the street is doing. Maybe we can get something going on both sides of the highway.

      Commercial Caches

On my way back from Marshfield today, I began thinking about this.
But the $10 Gift Card is a promotion, and therefore makes this cache of a commercial nature.

Commercial caches will not be published on geocaching.com without prior approval from Groundspeak. A commercial cache is a geocache listing or geocache which is perceived by Groundspeak, Groundspeak’s employees, or the Volunteer Geocache Reviewers as having been submitted to geocaching.com with the principal or substantial intent of soliciting customers or generating commercial gain. The geocache is presumed to be commercial if the finder is required to go inside a business, interact with employees, and/or purchase a product or service, or if the cache listing has overtones of advertising, marketing, or promotion.

Additionally, links to businesses, commercial advertisers, charities, political or social agendas, or the inclusion of their associated logos are not permitted on cache descriptions without prior permission from Groundspeak

But you don’t have to go in, only if you want the promotion!

      #1920713

I agree, I think by “commercial,” groundspeak means something that requires you to make a purchase of some type…..movie tickets, attraction entry fees, whatever. We looked into the possibility of creating an EarthCache at Cave of the Mounds, which requires an entry fee. That’s considered a commercial cache (and one we have permission from groundspeak to pursue, but we haven’t thus far).

The now-much sought after remaining Project APE caches were commercial. They served as a tie-in to a movie release, much like McDonald Spiderman toys.

But we still want to do that APE cache someday!

      😉

I’ve just moved this cache up on my priority list!

Yeah, me too, Shane. I can always find a use for ten bucks at Gander! Really nice of that store’s management to make this offer and I wonder how long it will last.

When 500 of us run over there to get our $10!

Let’s all go at once, LOL.

remember, it is a gift card, not cash 🙂
they won’t lose any money in the deal. I get $10 cards in the Whitetails Unlimited mailers a couple times a year. Somehow I always spend more than I have in cards 😕
