What’s the difference?
05/20/2005 at 1:50 am #1740544About $60…
05/20/2005 at 3:14 am #1740545Both the GPSMAP 60CS and GPSMAP 60C are packed with extra features, including rapid automatic route calculation, an integrated outdoor calendar, a dedicated geocaching mode, and indoor/outdoor GPS games that turn the outdoors into a giant gameboard.
The GPSMAP 60CS also offers an electronic compass and barometric altimeter for highland adventures. These sensors, when combined with GPS technology, provide enhanced bearing and elevation readings.

05/20/2005 at 5:36 am #1740546We have the CS model and I think I would buy the C if I had to do it again. The compass sounds nice but mine does not work very well. If you calibrate it often, like every time you get out of the car, it works fine. I am to lazy to calibrate it so often so I end up walking to where the distance goes down, not where the arrow is pointing. Is this the same experience as other CS users, or do I have a defective unit?
05/20/2005 at 1:34 pm #1740547I was doing the BoB series with Gizfinder last week and he only had to recalibrate his compass when he changed batteries. The unit was left on the entire time.
If it were brand new and it was my money (Mr.Thrifty sometimes) I would skip the CS and buy the 60C. Altimeter, compass feature and shorter battery life to me are not worth the $60 extra dollars. If it were the same price……maybe?

05/21/2005 at 2:33 am #1740548We have a 76S and a 76C. I have to agree with the others who advise the compass isn’t worth the extra money. For the price difference, you could get a good compass and have a lot money to spare. Our compass is very fussy about being held exactly level, something that’s tough to do when you’re walking. We only use it when we’ve forgotten the Silva at home.

05/25/2005 at 2:40 pm #1740549I have a 76CS, and I love the built in compass. However, I do not leave it on all of the time.
Before I first head out of a parking area, I turn it on to get a good bearing of the general direction of the cache. Once I start walking, I cannot hold the unit perfectly level, so the built-in compass kinda goes wacko. At that time, I turn it off until I get close to the cache. Once I stop to look around, I turn it back on, and it works as good as an external compass.
05/26/2005 at 1:53 am #1740550I too have the GPSMAP 76cs and love it so far. Granted it is my first gps unit. I was wondering what was wrong with my compass but after reading here I bet it just needs to be calibrated again.
Here is a link to the store I bought mine: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=34289&item=5776121121&rd=1
They have the all the models talked about above. The store is close by us (Michigan).TripWire
