I have to send my Legend in. The last time I took school kids out caching, one wanted the GPS while another still had ahold of the lanyard. A tug of war ensued, and sure enough, the little plastic post busted out. Garmin won’t fix this one for nothing, but they did cut the normal $79.00 factory repair rate in half, since it was being used in an educational setting.

Each kid is throwing in $10.00, and I’m paying the other half. I have had the GPS for several years.

Anyway, Garmin suggested I upload all my waypoint data to my pc, as they cannot assure me that it will survive.

Any suggestions as to how to do this?

    Thanks a lot, Grandpa Jim

What ever program you are using to down load should also allow you do upload from your GPS. On a side note, you might want to check Wal-mart in your area as the local one here marked down their old Etrex’s to $79. Instead of fixing the one you have, maybe put the money toward a new unit? Heck, Talk to the store manager, explain you are teaching kids and they might even donate you one!

We have the yellow eTrex H that we’ve been using since October, but there is no downloading capability for that (we use the old finger exercise regimen). Which ones are marked down to $79? Can it download waypoints?

Maybe get that one for the kids (loved the fighting story–“educational purposes”) and get the one you want for yourself (or get the old standby fixed).

It was the blue legend blue Etrex. A friend I work with has one and I was able to down load the State of Montana to it as that is where they go elk hunting..

You can buy a cable for that yellow etrex, just make sure your PC has a serial port.

You can also buy a Serial to USB adapter if you pc doesn’t have a serial port, you can find these much cheaper if you don’t buy from garmin.

The busted GPS is a blue Legend. They were on sale around here this fall for $135.00, which included a set of topo cd’s. I have not seen them any cheaper, but at $79.00 I’d consider another one. I have been very happy with this GPS.

BTW, this was being used in an educational setting. This was an end-of-the-quarter minicourse at the middle school where I teach.

It will be Sunday evening before I can fiddle with backing up the data. We have lots going on between now and then. If anybody has any more specific advice on the particulars of the back-up procedure, I’d appreciate hearing it.

      Thanks a lot. Jim

Jim, what program do you use now to download your data? If you have Mapsource or EASY GPS you will be able to up load all your info from your unit and easily save it in a file. I guess the big question is do you have a patch cord?

Middle school kids–no need to say more. They’ll fight over a #2 pencil.

That’s nice to know. Think we have just USB ports, and it’s a Mac. I know, there is now Mac-capability for geocaching, but we’re just taking things slowly right now. May have to investigate this if we pick up the pace and start traveling outside our comfort zone as the weather improves.

Yes, we have the cord, and we use EasyGPS to download waypoints from GC.com.

Yes to the comments about middle schoolers as well!

Here is a Blue Etrex Legend, comes with two map CD’s and a serial cable. Currenty $42 on e-Bay. HURRY! Ends in 10 hours.

Then again, there’s a whole bunch more for around the same price.

I was watching these on ebay about a month ago, when we were shopping for a GPS for our newly addicted grandson. The Legends with any accessories ALL were going for > $100 by the final bell. Way too much!

We ended up with a terrific deal from a fellow cacher responding to a note left on these forums. It is an older Magellan (about equivelent to a Legend) which works great, and the kid is thrilled.

I’ll play with the uploading Sunday when we get home. I want to get this sent in and fixed before winter ends in July…

          Just use EasyGPS.

This may or may not be the case, but if you have downloaded your waypoints from the computer to the GPSr, aren’t the waypoints already on the computer?
