Greetings everyone. This is for the Garmin V users. I just bought one today and wanted to hear how well yours is working. How good it does in the thick cover and anything that might be helpful to me. Thanks for the help!

We currently use GPS III, the older model of this Garmin. We love it I’ve got a buddy that uses the GPS V and loves his dearly also. I would suggest getting the firmware updates from Garmin’s website. The newest version is 2.50 and can be found on here: http://www.garmin.com/products/gps5/ in the software updates tab.

    That’d be my best suggestion.

I have both a GPS III and the GPS V and have found over 350 with the GPS III. I have been using the GPS V to get me to the parking or general area, then switch to the GPS III to do my field work.

In a nut shell, I’m glad that I bought it but I haven’t quite figured how to change stuff as quick in the field as the older unit. Some day it will be my primary.

The GPS V is still a top of the line unit, in my opinion. I bought the latest GPSMAP60C and a side by side comparison showed the V ever bit as sensetive as the 60C. True, the 60C has some improvements but the V is still a top performer. Just be sure to use NiMh batteries with four spare ones along with you. Around ten hours use is what I’d average with mine.
