Just checking with the 60CS owners on how you like your unit. Im debating between this unit and a Magellan explorist 600. Im pushing toward the CS since i allready have the Garmin automapping program and could use it for the CS. Also on the electric compass if you have to keep the unit horizontal when using it on the compass page. Any other info would be appriciated.

    thanks

I got my 60CS about a month ago. I like it a lot. You can disable the compass. But accuracy seems to be pretty darn good, and battery life is amazing (mine need replacing just today.) But I don’t know much about the Explorist series.

i’ll 2nd the hound. I really really like my CS, i’ve had it for about 6 months now, and haven’t had any problems with it.

Can you tell me about the compass. Do you have to hold it level horizintal for it to accurately work?

according to the manual, the compass is more accurate if held horizontal. But that really hasn’t been an issue….since most of the time i use the compass screen i’m hiking, and have the unit in hand. The screen is visable from all angles.

I love mine, but have found it to be a bit quirky in a few areas. Yes, I’ve found you pretty much have to hold it horizontally for the electronic compass to work properly. On my first unit, it seemed to lose calibration often for no reason so I would have to switch back to the GPS compass mid-stream.

Then the power button stopped working. (First it wouldn’t turn the unit off. Then I couldn’t turn it on!) I must say that the support people at Garmin were top-notch and, after checking my old unit out, sent me a new one with my waypoints already downloaded.

Once in a while, the auto-routing makes odd choices, but 99% of the time, I love it.

I found that if I calibrate the compass by holding it at the angle I would hold it when walking, I don’t get the HOLD LEVEL message as often.

We have a 60C and LOVE IT. We upgraded from a 76S and found the compass to be a waste of money and battery life. The only time we’d ever use it was for a heading to the next cache. We have found that a regular compass along with the heading on the GPS works MUCH better. The compass aside, the 60C/S is a great unit and would HIGHLY recomend it!!!!

Just in case you’re not on the mailing list… Got this about a week ago.. Haven’t tried it yet!!

Garmin is pleased to announce that new software is available for the GPSMAP 60CS.

The new software is: GPSMAP 60CS Ver. 3.80

You can download the new software from our website by clicking the following link:

    http://www.garmin.com/support/collection.jsp?product=010-00322-30

Changes made from version 3.70 to 3.80:

    * Corrected intermittent USB data transfer.
    * Corrected ‘Recalculate’ option for ‘Off Road’ navigation.

    Cheers!!

I have the 3.80 loaded in my 60C and happily, it fixed the lockup when I would find a geocache, use the find next feature and then do a recalculate and then it would lock up. I’d have to pull a battery. One other glitch I’ve noticed that I’d like other 60C and 60CS owners to check is the COURSE POINTER. It seems mine is way out of whack up close but ok at a distance. The distance to, stays correct however. I don’t normally use it but would if I were flying or boating and sometimes when I have to cross a large field.
