Not sure if anyone’s buying a Nuvi this weekend, (can you Geocache with it?) but I did notice on Garmin’s website that they are offering an update guarantee against outdated maps on some new purchases.
I know Garmin’s been getting bad press (even here) about people buying brand new GPS’s with outdated maps and trying to charge them $$$ to get the maps up to date.
I think you type in your serial number or something, so even if you have a previously purchased unit, perhaps you can score some FREE updates. Doesn’t hurt to try.
Does anyone know when Garmin plans on their next update?
Is there a typical schedule they stick to or just random?
I ask this since it would be very disappointing to get your FREE updated maps then find out that 11 days later a new version came out and you already used your free update.
We purchased ours early this summer and the update was already ST 2009, no idea if they update every year

Garmin updates the maps every year. It used to be every July-August, but this last update was out in June.
I have upgraded a few times, Usually you will notice at least some new streets and bypasses will be added. The last update from City Navigator 2008 to 2009 they also added allot more water info: lakes, streams, and rivers.
Garmin has been using Navteq for their map data for awhile now, if you ever find any map errors that never seem to get fixed, you can submit those errors to Navteq to get them updated. I Submitted a few and most were fixed within 6 months.

It’s nothing new that Garmin is offering these free map updates. As long as you take the time to register your map software or GPS unit, if it was purchased after the new version was out you were offered the new version for free.
