Something is going on over at the opencaching site…there is now a badgerish looking blue mascot on the page.

I think his name is Blue BuckTooth Bobby. And he’s mighty creepy looking (IMHO).

wouldn’t be creepy if he was on the page when it opens … but he’s acting a bit like a stalker or something.

    from my blog: [here]

Garmin is secretly developing a website OpenCaching.com which currently holds the statement “your caches, your devices, your community”.

I am very weary about the development of a so called ‘open’ Geocaching community or content website sponsored by a for profit GPS hardware technology company.

Too much is too bad. Who comes to our needed responsibility consideration and response of Geocache placement and community communications when it comes to need of an official forums for questions, comments, and concerns for Geocaching activities in all of our communities? Groundspeak may look like it is loosing a foot hold on responsible social Geocaching as a hobby and is being stripped of its soul purpose of a global presence for our beloved passion by a for profit company in which its primary focus, outlook, and goal is for profit and the company success.

Their are alternative “Open Geocaching” websites revealing themselves on the Internet periodically. Though the passion and drive of the organizational alternatives of these is not of a commercial nature and is rather for the benefit of the Geocaching community.

We have yet to see what OpenCaching.com will bring to Geocachers, Geocaching, and quite possibly only their customer base. I have a bad feeling about this one Garmin.

I finally succumbed to temptation and clicked on the linky… Is this supposed to be building anticipation? Even a basic premise would offer something to be curious about. I’ve been a loyal Garmin user from the outset, but they shouldn’t mistake my loyalty for a desire to replace a quality product with an untested and unknown quantity.

I’ve actually discussed this while caching with friends, and I’m most curious as to how a different site will improve on the fundamental idea of listing boxes placed at coordinates. I guess some yearn for freedom of expression, but the vast majority of hides on any site will remain traditionals.

Even so, competition will only improve the site that I will remain loyal to.

The text is now in German: “Bald auch unter einem Baumstumpf in deiner Nähe: Kostenlos, offen, in deiner Sprache!”

    and translates to:

“Soon, under a tree stump near you: Free, open, in your language!”

    What does it mean?

Apparently they have hidden something under a tree stump near my home…I sure hope it’s a new Nuvi…I really want a Nuvi.

Kidding aside, I do plan to use the Garmin site should it become a reality. GC placements have become too constrictive for new placements. I’m not a huge fan of the proximity limitations imposed by GC.

That showed up yesterday…I’m keeping a close eye on this one. I’m excited about a new listing site that might actually finally give GC a run…

In what way? All I see is the splash image on the page.

Looked and all I can say is for the “Awesomeness” rating I give it a big old 1. I’d give it a zero, but the scale only goes to 1.

Traditionals, Multi’s, Puzzles? That’s it? Nothing new / exciting? At least opencaching.us brought some new cache types, a WYSIWYG editor for descriptions, etc. This has nothing new that I can see (except the “Awesomeness” rating and that ability to rate by 0.1 in difficulty, terrain, size instead of 0.5 increments).

Nearest caches are in SE Minnesota.

The page doesn’t go past the splash on Firefox but I can see it on IE…there is their first big mistake. This is a Beta though…and very bare bones. So far it looks like a cheap knock off of Geocaching.com.

I have firefox (3.6.12) and it displays a search page for me when I visit. There’s a log a cache button. And a geocaching guide button. No time to explore this morning..
