yeah with gas the way it is this is the reason I have a gps mount on my bike with city maps on it save a ton of gas.. But since ive cached out most of my city it makes it kinda hard to bike to caches.
04/23/2011 at 12:09 pm #1946893I put on about 90 miles every day just back-n-forth to work. That pretty much takes care of our gas budget! Even driving our little Toyotas, I go through plenty of gas. I’ll catch caches en route when weather and daylight and schedule allow, but we have not made many special trips lately.

Urban caching with a bike is not an option for me. I use my Nuvi to get me to places when using my car. Car charger is always plugged into it. A Nuvi typically lasts about 3 to 4 hours on a full charge when not plugged.
So unless there is a charger that generates power from the bike itself similar to some bike lights, I doubt i’ll use the bike for urban caching. I’ll use it on trails though as i dont have to deal with city streets.
I have a bike mount for my Garmin Colorado (same size as Oregon), so that is an option for navigation while on bike.

04/25/2011 at 6:12 pm #1946895Living just west of Milwaukee (by about 200 feet) there are plenty of caches to still find, so gas and mileage are not as much a concern for us. We’ve found a little north of 800 so far, and there’s probably still another 800 or so within 15 miles of us. Having said that, even at $5 per gallon it’s still healthy and relatively cheap entertainment if we drive farther than that. If we drive 50 miles round trip, at $4/gallon that costs us about $8 for an afternoon of hiking and adventure, and sure beats being planted in front of the TV. If gas goes up to $5/gallon, that’s about $10 for the afternoon. Assuming you make your own meals and use rechargeable batteries, that’s still a fairly inexpensive way to go. I realize that at $4/gallon it can be a sacrifice for some and not for others, so it’s all relative. For Kim and I, we appreciate the govt spending $4billion on satellites just so we can enjoy our daily caching to get some sun, exercise, and quality time together. 🙂
05/03/2011 at 1:20 am #1946896Gas 4.24 here. I totally will not be geocaching period unless I’m in an area for something else. Gonna make my gas last now by keeping my car local.
Sucks to live in an area where the nearest unfound caches are over 20 miles away.
05/03/2011 at 1:34 am #1946897Just saw 4.07 in Menasha this afternoon. That’s an 8 cent jump from Friday.
Holy cow!
Camping won’t be cheap this summer either.
05/03/2011 at 1:55 am #1946898Thank goodness I can use the motor cycle to cache. All I need to do now is find a way to keep the nuvi charged.
05/03/2011 at 5:15 am #1946899Gas went up to $4.07 in Hayward tonight.
05/03/2011 at 12:40 pm #1946900In Eagle River it jumped to $4.24 and $4.29 yesterday.
TE05/03/2011 at 3:53 pm #1946901Waukesha range is $4.09 to $4.29
Greenfield/Greendale most are $4.1505/03/2011 at 4:45 pm #1946902I am so happy the Lime Squeeze gets 40MPG. I have a long distance trip coming up, and while I wish the prices were at least what they were a week ago, I’m not going to stress. Family and some fun on the way to visit them are still worth the cost to me. We’ve long tried to combine our travels anyway, and our caching has progressively slowed down these past two years, so we aren’t feeling it so much.
I do recall that our “worst” year of caching, the gas prices topped 4 bucks a gallon that summer, too. Didn’t seem to stop us then.
05/05/2011 at 12:50 am #1946903This is my entertainment/leisure expenses… don’t go out to movies… nothing coming out of Hollywood (‘cept 1 or 2 releases) worth my time or money.
My ol’ Saturn gets fairly good MPG. Plenty of caches nearby home I’ve yet to find… and will try to grab 1-2 when I head out to visit Mom in assisted living in Germantown (rich area for caches 😉
05/05/2011 at 4:40 am #1946904I’ve been planning ahead of time. If my travels take me to out of town or across town. Figure might as well find a few caches while I’m there. Kill two birds with one stone theory.
