Gas is going down around here. $3.59 for Super Unleaded(w.ethanol)

Gas is $4.05 in Oconomowoc this morning.
05/23/2008 at 12:33 pm #1759672We were just talking last night about the spiraling costs and the future of our own geocaching. We have a couple trips already planned, but after that, we think our days of big caching runs are over. 🙁 We just cannot afford it any longer on our salaries. We’ll get local ones as they appear and then find caches when we have occasion to be on our way to other places.
Thank goodness we have other interests, or this would be much sadder than it already is!
05/23/2008 at 12:37 pm #1759673Echo….
I no longer leave the house for anything less than a handful of caches. I can’t afford the gas. Lately I’m doing power-trails and such. This is one of the reasons I have been looking for biking trails with caches on it. The more cache laden bike paths the better!
05/23/2008 at 12:45 pm #1759674I drove down to Milwaukee and back yesterday to pick up my sister from the airport. Gas was 4.24 in Escanaba, MI. I saw it for $3.89 (I think) in Sheboygan and I payed $4.19 like a sucker in Milwaukee (area) yesterday. At least I was able to find 20 caches during the long day.
05/23/2008 at 1:36 pm #1759675Maybe the rule of “distance between” caches could be less so in smaller parks we could have 2-3 caches vs. just one. I too look for caches that I can bike to or drive then bike. I know it isn’t about quantity, but the more I can hunt for in one area the better while gas prices are so high.

I don’t think a super saturation of caches is a great idea. Maybe more people should archive some caches…and replant some better ones. I know that that has been brought up on these forums before, but I think it is a great idea. Archive 25% of your caches…for example if we have 200 caches in Green Bay that means that 50 would be out and FIFTY NEW CACHES PLANTED!
05/23/2008 at 2:05 pm #1759677I’m not sure I’d be opposed to supersaturation in city parks. Even with the relative handful of finds we’ve had here, there have already been several times I’ve looked around a park area and thought “this is the best place for a cache?!?!??”
05/23/2008 at 7:26 pm #1759678I was looking forward to hitting some counties and DeLorme pages in N.E. Wis.on the way up north for vacation this year. It doesn’t look like we can afford vacation this year. Gas alone will probably run us an extra Benji this year, not to mention the added cost of food. It wouldn’t be so bad if we could only take one vehicle, but that is out of the question.
05/23/2008 at 7:42 pm #1759679As it is, we are strongly considering renting bikes in Mackinac instead of bringing our own. The cost may very well offset what it would have cost to run the bigger vehicle needed to haul them.
Maybe this will be our summer to do a lot more paddling the local waters instead of caching. That would be okay, too. Someone suggested recently we’d go insane if caching ceased to exist. Sad, yes. But there are so many other ways to enjoy the outdoors for far less travel!
05/23/2008 at 7:45 pm #1759680Gas hit $4.19 here in Kenosha today’s for regular. Both of our cars take premium, which is now $4.39. 😯
Just saw a report on Fox6 this morning claiming experts say gas will reach $5.00 a gallon by Labor Day.
Why is there no puking emoticon???

Agreed but I’m guessing they are on to that fact at the ol island and have likely raised the prices…surely the ferry costs more now.
05/23/2008 at 7:59 pm #1759682I wasn’t going to fix my motorcycle this year because it cost too much. Now that gas hit 4 dollars / gallon I can justify the repair cost.
05/23/2008 at 8:02 pm #1759683Do you really want a downer? Or maybe something to really p— you off? Take it how you want. Yesterday morning sometime, (and I forget the network) some guy from the energy departmaent said that we are going to see 12-15 dollar/gallon gasoline. I did not hear his prediction of when though. He might have said 30 years from now for all I know.
My wife and daughter just came home from Germany yesterday, and gas there was over $7/gal. And I saw the Netherlands were over $9.
Can you imagine $15 for gas? All of the chaos and crime? The cost of food and clothes?
05/23/2008 at 8:19 pm #1759684Well I guess $15/g makes me smile at $4/g. We may have to switch to virtual geocaching using google earth.
