Has anyone noticed how slow the GC.com website is on the weekends? Sometimes it’s almost impossible view cache pages, even with high speed internet.
This has also made it very difficult to review/approve cache pages over the weekend. There have many days, today included, where I just can’t pull up the necessary pages to review caches. New caches submitted on the weekend will probably end up being held until early in the week.

[email protected]04/12/2004 at 1:14 am #1746641This has been a worsening issue for some time now. The servers Groundspeak uses simply do not have the bandwidth for the number of users logging on.
My question would be what is the financial situation at Groundspeak & when will the issue be solved? I encourage all WI cachers to become a premium member at geocaching.com and hope the $$ is there to get some more bandwidth.
Some stats to reflect the issue-
As of today, there are 92664 active caches in 202 countries.
In the last 7 days, there have been 68714 new logs written by 13838 account holders.Today’s Response from Jeremy Irish-
Workin’ on it.
We’re experiencing record traffic today, and we’re not *quite* set up to have multiple servers running the web site. But we’re close. By May 1st we will be much more responsive to peak times.Be gentle to the machines today. Try logging your finds tomorrow when traffic has diminished somewhat.

Groundspeak – The Language of Location(tm)04/12/2004 at 2:03 am #1746642I agree. Please become a Premium member. The little amount of money it costs goes to a great cause for which I get so much in return. Plus… there are “Members Only” caches to find AND the mapping features for the members are incredible! It’s nice to give back a little to a hobby which does so much for us…
Also – having organized many a large event in the past for various organizations… please consider kicking in a few bucks to those that organize the campout. I know that I intend to. So many people are going to be putting in a lot of their time and probably a few of their own bucks into the organization of this year’s campout.
Okay.. I’m off my soapbox!

04/15/2004 at 6:26 pm #1746643A little bird told me that GC.com has 5 new computers on order and will hopefully be in service by May 1st. This should greatly improve the speed over the weekends.
04/18/2004 at 4:11 am #1746644It looks like the site might be down tonight?? I downloaded our caches to search for earlier this week but was hoping to get on to see if any had changes. I am getting a site down message right now.
04/18/2004 at 4:14 am #1746645It went down not too long ago. I was checking some stuff and *poof* it was gone. Really annoying, since I need it for tomorrow’s caching!

04/18/2004 at 4:17 am #1746646I had hoped being later, Imight be able to get in. I guess that is not happening. Good Luck
04/18/2004 at 4:08 pm #1746647There is some comfort in numbers. I frequent a trade technical site and the traffic load requires similar hardware and time efforts. That site is asking supporters to ante up $10 a month to cover expenses! So, by all means, become a premium member. It is a value for the price.
However, I still feel that there must be a better way. Where is the bulk of the traffic created? Probably on the west and east coasts of the country and who knows how much foreign traffic is created. It seems to me that regional sites would be a better way to do things, but then again, I’m not an internet expert. Something must be done to improve it. Part of the fun of geocaching is coming home and getting the logs posted and check of the BBS. Waiting a day or two takes some fun out of it.
04/22/2004 at 1:52 am #1746648I think we should update this to say .. slow or impossible most of the time. I keep getting the server error this evening again.
04/22/2004 at 2:25 am #1746649Something must be wrong at GC.com. I’ve been trying to approve caches tonight but cant get on the site. Once in a while I can view a page, but not the ones I need.
Frustrating to know people are patiently waiting for their caches to be approved, and there is nothing I can do but keep postponing it.
I’m told GC.com has a bunch of new computers on order. One will be a server dedicated to the approvers. This should allow us to approve caches over during the busy times, hopefully!
