We ran across this site yesterday and wondered what folks think of this concept:

The “replace” option is going to lead to much confusion. 5 minutes / difficulty means that I could have replaced many caches already that are on the high D end after spending just 30 minutes there. This just doesn’t seem like a good idea to me.

I like the idea for caches that are in a really special place or ones that you have spent a good deal of time (searching, puzzle, etc.) on and it has now gone missing.
Those magnetics on a guardrail with a cache description like “quick stop to stretch your legs…” I’ll most likely let someone else take care of it.
It reminds me of a cache I spent a great deal of time on to solve, and then it went missing. It was archived and I wished I could have solved/found it before it went missing.
10/21/2011 at 9:47 pm #1954092A really bad idea. This will lead to more cachers placing caches and not intending to maintain them in the future. Why should they if they can get someone else to do it later.
10/21/2011 at 9:49 pm #1954093Just to save us all a lot of trouble, Groundspeak does not allow linking to this particular website on cache pages. (There are a few still out there, but none in Wisconsin that I have found.) You can indicate on your cache page that you will allow people to maintain your cache page for you if you like, but I can also tell you that such a note will NOT buy you any favor with the people looking at caches which have needed maintenance for an extended period.

There are quite a few that copy and paste the text from that site, which doesn’t seem that different from simply including the link.

The way this cache devolved, was likely sad to see for the original CO. But did the original ‘reason for being’ disappear? It looks like the artwork was pulled out at some point.
(But thanks for sharing this, as we did enjoy looking at the pictures. Guess we missed something memorable, that would have been worth the trip!)

First, there is a huge difference between designating a responsible local person to look after a remote cache, and simply pasting verbiage on your cache page telling people they can feel free to replace a cache after 5 x D minutes of looking. The first is responsible, the second is lazy.
There are too many players in this game who think they are hot stuff because they have X00s of caches placed out there when they only have the wherewithal and/or provisions in place to care for a fraction of that amount.
Second, a fair amount of the artwork is still in place; not as impressive as it used to be but still worth the visit. We were there in August.

That pretty well sums up what we were thinking, too.
01/22/2012 at 2:56 am #1954101I was looking for a cache the other day. The location has a special meaning to me. It had gone missing quite a while back. So I wrote to the CO and asked him if he would mind if I replaced the log and the very clever magnetic container. He was more than happy to let me do it. As long as you ask and don’t just take it upon yourself a lot of people are glad to have you repair or replace their caches.
01/22/2012 at 3:17 am #1954102I’ve yet to hit a power trail in which the CO allows replacement if the cache is not found. But if I do hit such a trail and I can’t find the cache, I’ll log the DNF. I’ll not replace the cache. If the CO can make the time to put out 200 caches on one trail, he make the time to replace them himself.
I will, however, replace or maintain LOCAL caches for a CO if asked only if I have found it previously.

Sounds like that’s the way to do it, Peanut. Maybe others can visit that special place now, looking for the cache.
