Geocachers are just so friendly!

So I’ve now been geocaching for 2 years. In that time I’ve made a lot of friends, which has been great! I’ve really enjoyed the friendships that I’ve made because of geocaching. I’ve met a lot of the regular WGA forum posters at different events, but not all of you. It’s been so fun making new friends with similar interests. I just felt a little sentimental tonight and wanted to share. 😀 Thanks everyone for being so friendly!

And on that related note, it’s not just Wisconsin geocachers that are friendly. In June we are planning a vacation to Hawaii to celebrate my husband’s and my 15th anniversary. I was of course checking out the caching opportunities and I came across this really excellent 5/5 adventure! I wrote a note on the cache page asking if there was interest from the locals or from other vacationers in teaming up. Soon I was contacted by a local who put my request up on their local facebook page, then I got a bunch of friend requests on facebook and geocaching.com, I was invited to their group and have received numerous messages and posts and we’re organizing a group caching trip for the 5/5. How exciting! I can’t wait to meet some locals and get to know some people there. And this cache looks great, too! Does anyone else contact local cachers when they travel? I read an article about this in a magazine once, encouraging people to do so.

we went to DC some time ago and we posted that we would like to find some interesting caches out there and we were contacted by a cacher in maryland that there was an ape cache in that state and that if we took the subway up there that they would pick us up and take us to the park to find it we had a good time with him and was a nice guy to cache with

We had a wonderful experience in Washington state at a gas station of all places. We had stopped there to grab a bite to eat at Subway and and the time I had my WGA hoodie on. Well this very friendly young gentleman approaches Karen and I and points to his hat which has the geocaching.com logo on it!

Well we started chatting, exchanged some TB discoveries, and we even provided him with a WGA pathtag and some pencils. Was a very positive all be it quick random encounter with a geocacher thousands of miles from home.

I was on my way to India with a stop in Amsterdam and I had a travel bug that wanted to be left in Holland. Unfortunately my first GPS was stolen by a pickpocket despite my putting it in a buttoned front jacket pocket. 😯 I needed to find a cache to leave the Bug but no longer had my Garmin V to use to find one. I posted a message on the forums and was contacted by a nice geocacher. She described one to me that would be easy to find (abandoned car)and gave me directions. Sure enough it was easy to spot. I completed my mission and dropped of the TB.

I was in Newfoundland two years ago to present a workshop at a storytelling conference. I posted on the regional forum on the groundspeak site for advice on where to cache if I had a little time and no transportation. I got some great information, and one even sent me to an online photo album to show me what I’d see if I did those caches. I don’t know if I’d have realized I’d be able to find the cache that is farthest east in North America if I hadn’t asked!

I’ve posted in the local geocaching association’s forums asking for recommended caches a couple times – once when going to New York and the other time when going to Texas. In both cases I got lots of cache recommendations and even suggestions for places to eat. It was especially nice when going to Houston, where there are so many caches it would take forever to pick out the good ones (this was before favorite points).

I also used local geocaching groups on my last vacation for cache suggestions when we went to Williamsburg, VA.

I talked to the Portland geocaching group on facebook and hopefully will be able to coordinate a group hunt for GC12 & GC16 when I’m there next month.

I posted back in January about the extensive multi we did in Central Park and I had contacted the CO before hand and while in NYC and he was so nice. His entire listing was riddled with entries about how helpful he was.

I would be surprised if we haven’t all encountered the same. Approaching a cache or looking for one and you encounter other cachers doing the same.

Have you ever been able to just say hello and continue your task especially after you identify each other as cachers? (Obvious GPS unit in the hands.)

NO, It usually turns into a long conversation about other caches, adventures, you name it. We just love to yak with each other about this activity. Perfect strangers until this activity creates a bond. We often log that we met “so and so” at the site.

How often does that happen with other things we’re doing? Try this next time you’re in the store picking out a brand of cereal. Then you’ll get some strange looks!
