I’m genuinely curious why cachers, when they place a cache, use an alias or bogus name rather than their legit geocaching name. So those of you who do it, why??? Is it to keep with a theme? To see if anyone notices??? Other reasons???
11/16/2009 at 2:20 pm #1917030just for fun I’d guess.
Only takes clicking on the name to get the profile of the cache hider. I released one as “Captain7″…it was a pirate themed cache.11/16/2009 at 2:41 pm #1917031I currently have two posted as “Flat Jack Foundit.” GC20A5D and GC20AC4.
He’s a character I created (similar to Flat Stanley) that places caches with a kid focus. He is also a new discoverable TB that travels with me. Why did I post it as Flat Jack instead of me? Seemed more fun if the listing and the cache matched the story that the caches were placed by the main character of the caches. It’s almost like a storyline. As I create more in this “theme” they will be placed by him not me.
I have seen other people that place them as different names that doesn’t seem to relate to anything of which I’m aware. Perhaps it’s an inside joke. I haven’t been doing this long but I have learned that with the wide variety of cachers personalities, you never really can predict why someone does something a certain way.
11/16/2009 at 3:21 pm #1917032I thought we were all placing caches using an alias.

11/16/2009 at 4:30 pm #1917034It seems most of the time the alias goes with the theme of the cache.
11/16/2009 at 5:15 pm #1917035I use to use an alias more often, but have not been doing so lately. Most of my early caches were on the theme of Neil Young songs, so I put something like Neil Young and Zuma in the placed by spot. As I go back and update those older ones, I have been taking the neil young out, and just listing them as placed by zuma.
Occasionaly, I run the GSAK macro which includes a section of how many caches you have found by each cacher name. I noticed that the alias thing messes with that, which is one of the reasons that I no longer use an alias, and just list them all by zuma!
It is not a big deal either way, just another personal preference area, and another area where we are each free to do what we think is the most fun.

11/16/2009 at 5:18 pm #1917036At first I thought you meant publishing caches under a different user name (sock puppet), which I haven’t seen done.
We have several caches under different aliases, and almost all are done just for fun. Usually “gotta run” becomes gotta fly, gotta hike, gotta tri, whatever.
There may be one or two where the alias a hint to a puzzle but I’m not saying which. 😉
On the Left Side of the Road...11/16/2009 at 9:28 pm #1917037On my Riddler series of caches I go by Riddler instead of TyeDyeSkyCrew. I’ve only used a different alias on one other occasion, which was to start a new “tribute” series. But, my cover was blown on the first cache. 🙁
11/16/2009 at 10:25 pm #1917038We purposely did the Battleship series that way for uniformity in the listings .. however, just a click and you will see who actually placed that particular cache.
11/16/2009 at 11:01 pm #1917039I have five “Lost” series caches where I refer to myself as “A Lost Fanatic”. As of late, I have listed myself as “The Brkster” on my hides, as most Racine/Kenosha cachers refer to me as that. Brkster (short for Brickster) is actually what I use as a yahoo ID since Brickster was already taken.
11/16/2009 at 11:20 pm #1917040I thought some used an alias to places caches that they know people would hate. 😆

I have seen a couple in Appleton that appear to be posted under sock puppet accounts based on the cache descriptions.
As for typing in a different “name” on the cache submission, I typically describe who hid the cache so sometimes it’s multiple members of my family including Brownie my dog on a recent one placed in a dog park. I don’t think I’ve flat out typed something misleading or “fake” in that field though.
11/17/2009 at 12:30 am #1917042I think we’ve done this only once, in keeping with a simple puzzle cache we put out, She Blinded Me with Science! “Madame Curie” placed that one, a subtle hint in case anyone forgot those symbols from high school science class.
