I was wondering who else here uses a tablet to assist with geocaching. I’m not saying to actually use the tablet to cache with. I’m saying to use it for information on a geocache.

My Garmin Venture HC is not a paperless device so I load my cache information on my Garmin Nuvi as well as the C:Geo app on my Samsung Galaxy S3. I store the caches on C:GEO so I don’t have to worry about being in an area without cellular coverage.

I know many GPS receivers also have paperless information such as an Oregon. But even then the Nuvi, phone, or paperless GPS receivers all have screens too small to gather a lot of information for field solve puzzles and earth caches.

That’s where a tablet comes in handy. I loaded the GDAK app on my Nook tablet , which uses the Android OS on it. I wanted to use C:GEO on the Nook but the app wasn’t compatible with the Nook so I installed the GDAK app instead. All I had to do was export the caches from the GSAK software on the computer and import it on the tablet. I used Google Drive to make the transfer a snap.

It was so much easier reading the information on my tablet for the field solve puzzle and earth cache that I visited earlier this week. I was able to write down the information quickly and proceed with the find. It would have been more difficult with the smaller screens on my phone or Nuvi.

Does anyone else use a tablet in the field to help them with geocaching?

It’s still a small device, but the write ups look as they do on the gc website. I have geosphere on my iPod and it’s invaluable for reading that kind of thing. Also, sometimes the long write ups get cut short in the Oregon.

Agreed about the long writeups on small devices like a phone or GPS receiver. That is where a tablet comes in handy with its bigger screen.

I’m surprised no one else has chimed in on this.
