Geocaching Apps for Iphones

OK what are the goods ones? Anything to replace my cachemate? Can GSAK interface with the Iphone? I have downloaded the Groundspeak one but it only shows the three nearest ones and I am always in spots where I have done them, is it worth the cost of the upgrade?

Dean, you must have the demo version of the geocaching app. If you have the full app, you can give it your name and password and it will only give you caches you haven’t found. It seems to give you an unlimited number of caches and provides all the information you can find on a cache page, with the only exception being that you only see the last 10 logs (you can see more by opening the cache page in a web browser, which I had to do a couple times.) Note that the program will show you the closest 5, 10, 15, or 20 caches based on the settings, but regardless of what you pick, it will give you a link at the bottom to “show the next X results”. The whole key is you have to hit the “Settings” button at the bottom of the screen and set up the app to your liking. (This is generally true for all but the most basic Iphone apps.)

You can also save any recent pocket queries to the phone memory, so that when you get to Timbuktu (or Door County) where you have no network coverage, you will still have your information. In theory, you should be able to upload gpx files for download to your phone, but this has not worked right since the beginning, so don’t count on that.

I can’t really speak to the other Iphone apps, as I haven’t used them, but I have used Cachemate, and I can tell you the gc.com app is WAY better. It isn’t even a fair competition.

I use Geosphere (from the app store) on my Ipod Touch and it works great. It works with both PQ’s from GC.com or custom GPX files I generate from GSAK (Solved Puzzles with notes). Geosphere also supports attributes, has maps, and works offline.

I will second the vote for Geosphere! I just love it! Works great! Well worth the $7.99 and it is easy to use! If you have a Yahoo or other internet e-mail account, you can load the PQ (via Wi-Fi) in your e-mail right into your iPod.

I had Cachemate on a Palm until just a few months ago. If you thought that was great, you are in for a treat! 😀

We had used Cachemate on our Palm, but when we went to the iTouch, we went with the Geosphere app and have not been disappointed. It has a lot of functionality for uploading cache pages and sorting caches. We love that we can write field notes as we cache. When we get home we access the field notes through gc.com and our logs are virtually written. It has saved us a lot of time and made the bookkeeping end of the sport less stressful.

Geosphere is really good, and easy to learn for those non-techie people. I particually like the field notes/found status that can easily be uploaded once connected to WI-FI, makes logging caches super easy.

Just to echo everyone else Geosphere is very very good, best caching app I have used by far.
