😆 Just happened to get a copy of today’s Journal Sentinel and I noticed that they are to have an article in Friday’s cue section on geocaching. So I just thought I’d let everyone know. Now, back to your regular programming.
08/04/2006 at 1:34 am #1764243The preview blurb on today’s cue page [with my comments in brackets]:
Tomorrow in Cue
Geocaching, high-tech treasure hunting using the Web and GPS, has spawned an active community of enthusiasts in Wisconsin who use Web sites, maps and Global Positioning System receivers [Didn’t they just say that in the same sentence?] to hide and seek booty [Really? Booty? I’ll have to check the features on mine.] in some of the most interesting and beautiful places in the state.[Well, at least they got that part right. All in all, not a bad little blurb, even though a bit redundant. However, the teaser on page 2 of the main section says this:]
COMING TOMORROW
Treasure hunters
More and more people in search of buried treasure [arrrgh!! not the dreaded “buried treasure” phrase!] are exploring the world and their own backyards using the Web and GPS.08/04/2006 at 12:36 pm #1764244Generally, a nice article, but this should be in the bylaws somewhere:
“When approached by a reporter, always be sure to emphasize that geocaches aren’t buried. Repeat several times during the interview.”
08/04/2006 at 1:04 pm #1764245I read it this morning. Overall a very nice full-page story, with several plugs for the WGA. Read it online here: http://www.jsonline.com/story/index.aspx?id=479665
Those of you who attended the first-ever Wisconsin geocaching event in August 2001 may remember Stanley Miller, the Journal Sentinel reporter who wrote today’s story. He also attended the 2001 Pike Lake event and wrote this story: http://www2.jsonline.com/news/metro/aug01/geo27082601a.asp
08/04/2006 at 2:11 pm #1764246In the picture on the right … just what is that red “GPS receiver” … it kinda looks like a PDA that you would get with a Happy Meal.
08/04/2006 at 3:21 pm #1764247You’ll never be lost with that GPS…
Considering it’s color and size, it can be seen from space.08/04/2006 at 4:52 pm #1764248And imagine the royalty fees to MapQuest for using their trademarked maps and little red star!
08/04/2006 at 5:43 pm #1764249And people complain that the GPS and ammo box in the WGA logo look like unrealistic. How about we replace the earth in the Journal graphic with the outline of the state of Wisconsin and go with it for the new WGA logo? 🙂

Thanks for the blast from the past Ken. The article was worth reading over again just to see this now famous quote:
Sometimes I think aliens are messing with the satellites, playing Pong with me, and I am the ball,” Worske said. “This is driving me crazy. It’s all these trees.”

If the WGA ever adopts an official motto or creed, my vote goes to: “Sometimes I think aliens are messing with the satellites, playing Pong with me, and I am the ball.”
It’s classic. We should get T-shirts made.
