Not overly excited about giving “points” to my fav caches like one of the links said. Seems kinda goofy.
Following the signals from space.
12/16/2010 at 2:52 am #1940423For “it’s not about the numbers,” it sure seems like they’re making it more “about the numbers.” 😕
12/16/2010 at 3:01 am #1940424So now you’ll be able to rate it? Big deal. Does anybody really think that anyone that only takes the time to post duplicate logs on all their caches or TFTC is going to bother rating the cache?
I like the concept of seeing more than 500 caches on a map at a time though. Being a puzzle addict I’ll uncheck all but the puzzle caches and then try to zoom out and it fails. Why? Because currently it pulls back the 500 nearest caches and then applies the filter. As a programmer it would make more sense to apply the filter prior and bring back only puzzles being that’s all I want displayed.
So they acquired a stat generator. Ho Hum. Yawn.
Sorting / Filtering – Now this looks like it might be a good addition.
Favorites? Again – Ho Hum. Yawn.
Just my opinions on what I find useful when searching for caches.
12/16/2010 at 5:00 pm #1940425The idea of the favorites is to provide a system where you can see what caches other people have enjoyed (and conversely, ones that were enjoyed “not so much”.) I’m hoping (crossing my fingers) that in the following update, the favorite number will be added to the GPX file, and thus available to GSAK, Easy GPS, etc.
This will be more helpful to those of us who combine travel and geocaching. Since the number of favorites you can post is limited, most people will not waste their favorites on parking lots, guardrails and other nonsense. So, if you want to find the best caches in the area you are traveling, just load your query and sort by “favorites”. Then, you can be reasonably sure to find the “Don’t miss” highlights of the area, rather than finding the lampposts and fire hydrants. I can tell you that I will definitely be adding my favorites to the system, and I would encourage you to as well.

I agree, this might be a good development. I planned a vacation around good EarthCaches last summer and the family had a blast. The rating system has a lot of potential…it looks like folks with more finds are to be granted more “favorite tokens” to award also so that too is a good thing.
