I don’t know… if $3/month is all I have to pay for the fun I’m having, and even then paying is an option, I guess I couldn’t care less if Jeremy became a millionare from it.

Don’t get me wrong… J-Man has every right to make any and all money he can off his site. In my post that you quoted, I was simply trying to say (using as few words as possible), that if he was already getting rich selling t-shirts, bumper stickers, and keychains, I would feel differently about paying 30 bucks a year for the site… simply because, as I think it was Ken who states in a later post, I cringe also when free things start to cost, and then cost more, etc. But clearly this is a case of J-man needing the cover the bills, and maybe cut a nice profit after that. And I hope he does make some nice coin I have ZERO problem at all with his pay option. Even if I think the term “mocache” is really lame, and sounds an awful lot like “procache”

*Sigh* Need more coffee, I think I just started to babble.

I am very new to geocaching. I know I was AMAZED this website was run by one individual, FREE. Seemed almost too good to be true. (Now am I to take it that the Jeremy who runs http://www.geocaching.com is also the Jeremy who posts here?)

I’ve belonged to a few photography forums. One you could “see the writing on the wall,” as someone else said. It was a contest site, giving prizes. Soon they wanted money to post a photo entry, their income from sponsors was apparently not enough to make it. Maybe a month or two down the line, BOOM, the site was gone.

    I belong to http://www.photo.net and http://www.usefilm.com
Both have started requesting donations from people using the sites and posting photos there (that sucks even MORE bandwidth). They haven’t gone to implementing a fee. At least at Usefilm, you make a donation of a certain amount or more, and you get a free print.

On both sites, those making donations have an icon by their name designating them as such when they post. At Usefilm, those who donate can upload up to three photos a day to the site; others can post only one. (People then critique them.)They get “more” benefits because they are members.

Just kind of throwing out a few ideas on how a few other sites handle the fee question. But we all know websites don’t run for free. Now I need to check out the new feature here.

Upon reading the info, looks like this will implement a lot of the same type features I see on the photography sites. Good idea! (shoulda read it first…DOH!)

Hi lizs, and welcome to geocaching and to WGA. We too hope you can make it to the campout.

FYI, the Jeremy that runs geocaching.com and the Jeremy that posts here are not one in the same. Hence, to keep confusion to a minimum, we usually refer to the former as the J-Man and the latter as Jeremy.

I took the plunge and paid for the charter membership.

I figured that $30 is well worth all the fun I have had geocaching the last year.

The only thing I don’t like is the automatic renewal. In otherwords, the money will be deducted w/o your knowledge unless you cancel first.

I have been meaning donate to J-man but never got around to it. I guess this is my donation.

Now…for all those wishing to become WGA charter members, just send me your credit card numbers and I will sign you up.

Initially, you will be able to post messages on this board. After a while, you will be allowed to post messages on this board

Sorry for the confusion caused by my name. I’m thinking of changing it to ‘Not Jeremy Irish’ Vechinski. What do you guys think?

The other Jeremy is a soon to be dot-com millionaire (thanks to his pay-to-play scheme ) living in Seattle. I’m just a guy from Milwaukee.

I think we can get something set up on the WGA website to collect payments from members… shouldn’t be too hard, right CacheCows? Going to a pay to play format would allow some Wisconsin geocachers to quit their current jobs and go caching full time. What a great idea Brian!

Well, It sounds like everyone here has no problem with the “pay for extra services” plan that J-man has implemented. I’m also sending in my $30. I think I would rather be charged a small amount (optional, at that) than have to put up with advertising on the site, which would be his next obvious source of income. He does have some minor ads on the site now but it could get much, much worse. Member only caches sound like a good thing, too. I can see one of my future “hides” being a mocache for the first month or two.

I dunno…. Jeremy’s website really is lacking in the “Amazing x10 Cam” pop-under ads. He should add them. A website has absolutely NO credibility these days unless you can close your browser window and find an x10 ad under it
