Last nite there were 6 copies of e-mails sent to 6 cachers across the states, from geocaching dot com to them, via MY ID. All they said was “WOW”, but how the heck would something like that happen?? NO one knows my password, but I changed it JUST in case. If it’s a virus.. that makes it all the more weird. None of these people are on my e-mailing list. Any ideas??
Therefore if ANYONE receives a suspicious or inappropriate from me or anyone else, it might NOT be them. PLEASE e-mail me if get one with my ID on it, via geocaching. SORRY in advance!!
Thanks!! Anne

You need to contact Groundspeak on this issue: http://www.geocaching.com/contact/10/07/2005 at 12:04 pm #1740850Anne has already changed her geocaching.com password, which will hopefully prevent this from happening again.
And definitely contact geocaching.com… they log information each time a message is sent, which may be able to lead them back or at least give them a general idea of who the perpetrator might be.
10/07/2005 at 12:21 pm #1740851Thanks!!! Getting stuff done to take care of it. Just wanted others to know also… IT’s NOT ME. I have a specific signature, soooooo…..
Thanks all!!
10/07/2005 at 12:49 pm #1740852Anne just told me that her geocaching.com password was (but is no longer) the same as her WGA membership password, which I recently sent to her because she was having trouble logging into the WGA store. We are speculating that somehow someone saw or intercepted this email message and then used this password on geocaching.com.
For this reason, for all future password requests I will reset the password for the account in question to a random value and then send the new password. I will not send existing password values, even if you ask really, really nice and I know you. (Sorry Anne for my contribution to this security breach. I should have known better.)
This situation is also serves as a good lesson on why using the same password on multiple sites is not a good idea. If only one of the sites is compromised or hacked, the hacker can use the password found there to gain access to all of your accounts.
10/07/2005 at 3:44 pm #1740853It’s ok Jeremy….. this stuff happens! Guess I’ll just have to have a 101 passwords to remember now LOL Other accts, of great importance, I don’t use anything close to that which I use for my geocaching stuff, but just have to have a separate ones for these two. At least the use of the same passowrd for the 2 sites kept the incident under control.
Thanks for all the help!!
