Ok, so maybe it didn’t save a life but that’s a good attention grabber.

Today I started my day off by getting up early and going out caching. I wanted to get the Caching 1-2-3 series before it was disabled. It was around 45 minutes from the house to the cache and the drive was pleasant in the warm morning sun. About a mile from the cache on Hwy B, I saw a white pickup smoking along the road. As I neared, I could see that it had went head on into a tree. I stopped and got out of the car and noticed that the whole road was a sheet of ice. I called 911 with the cell phone to get help. I used the gps to tell them what road we were on, the nearest intersection, what was the closest town and what county we were in. I was able to keep her calm before the police came. It was lucky they were so quick because she was close to shock with a head wound and at least a broken nose.

Without geocaching, I would not have been on that quiet road (it was 10-15 minutes before another car passed)and I could not have given such accurate directions.

After the sherrif told me how many accidents he had been to this morning, I decided to head home without a single find. Although I’m sure she would have survived without me stopping, I like to think geocaching helped with the rescue.

As a member of the medical profession, I can tell you there is a golden hour after trauma that is important. Lot’s of injuries can not be totally assessed out in the field. That hour is important to the injured…in some cases it can be the difference between living and dying. You were at the right place and the right time. You did all the right things and then some. You did great! lucy

I don’t know if geocaching saved a life, but Geotrippers sure might have. Way to go.

Yikes! We just drove down that road yesterday! (Yes, we were finishing up the Caching 1-2-3 series plus doing the other multi in the park – both highly recommended BTW.)

Awesome job Geotrippers!!! It’s nice when that GPSr can be used for something more important than finding a box in the woods.

Way to go you “first responder!” I was surprised at how late it took the salt/sand trucks to hit the roads!
