We will be traveling to Russia at the end of April. In searching for infomation on caches we might find there, we found some information that posessing a GPSr in Russia (if not a Russian citizen) is illegal and can result in confiscation of the GPSr and being jailed. Does anyone out there have any information on this?
Have any of you geocached in Russia? Our route is from Moscow to St. Petersburg (via river cruise)
Thanks in advance for any information you can give us.

04/07/2006 at 6:30 pm #1741264I’ve never cached in Russia, and doubt that I’d ever get the opportunity, but there are 33 caches in Russia to be found (looks like most are in English too!) GPSrs are mentioned, so they must not be illegal.
Check with a travel agent regarding this, or maybe some travel guides (specifically ones that address backpacking I think). Might be able to answer some of your questions.
Have fun!

04/07/2006 at 6:35 pm #1741265But you will have to take some time to figure out the logs others have left. And example:
January 23 by XXXXX (6 found)
Have found January, 22. A place excellent, a hiding place excellent, weather excellent. Will come behind a hiding place in the winter necessarily take with itself a ski.04/07/2006 at 7:17 pm #1741266Thanks for the suggestions Bec. I myself am a travel agent…..and unfortunately have no info on this issue.
We also found the caches listed and the logs, but upon further investigation found this from the US Depatrment of State http://travel.state.gov/travel/gps.html
Therefore we became worried.
We are leaning towards leaving the GPS at home, which is disappointing for us.

04/07/2006 at 7:22 pm #1741267I read your posted link — scary! If you could somehow prove you were going to use it solely for geocaching…..?
Perhaps you can contact one of the geocachers who placed caches in Russia and borrow a GPSr from one of them?
(ooh, a travel agent you say? I must keep that in mind…..)

AstroD-Team04/07/2006 at 11:48 pm #1741269Someone at geocaching.com sent me this link. We will do some serious thinking about taking our GPS, but from this one article it does sound a bit more promising. However the other came from the US State Dept so………ah, decisions, decisions, decisions!
