So I own a few EarthCaches and when people log them without sending answers I send them a friendly email reminding them. And when I say friendly, I really do feel like it has a friendly tone. In it I say that I like to maintain the integrity of the game. I got the following response today and it made me sad.
“Integrity” of geocaching. That’s a good one. ha, ha, ha, ha
There are clowns everywhere, whose favorite activities muggling good caches that they are jealous of. They don’t maintain their own caches, and when they do log one, they add their pals’ names and cheat. I can’t recall this cache but it certainly doesn’t ring a bell.”This person seems to recognize that there is a problem but seems perfectly OK by being a part of the problem. What a shame. I don’t even know how to respond to them!

01/24/2015 at 9:52 pm #2034167We have been there with a couple of similar in tone responses. It is annoying, but all you can really do is maintain your integrity. We can never control anyone else. It is indeed sad.

01/25/2015 at 8:55 am #2034184Funny you should bring this up. I got an e-mail this morning from a cacher in Rhinelander with over 200 active caches. He said, “I don’t like the direction GC.com is going and I’m pretty much done caching!”
I’m not sure what he meant by that statement, but I think that his issue is more with the direction that the game is heading, and not with Groundspeak of GC.com specifically. With many of his caches having lots of favorite points, I’m sure that easy-chair logging is part of the problem. He went on to tell me that he is planning to archive all of his caches “before long.” That’s a lot of lights going off in the Rhinelander area!
All opinions, comments, and useless drivel I post are mine alone and do not reflect the opinions of the WGA BOD.
01/25/2015 at 12:02 pm #2034198Professional sports, politics, and big business have taught us that cheating to get what you want is OK. While there are all sorts of personalities lurking behind geocaching names, I doubt that many people got into geocaching with the intent of cheating their way to the top. However, as they went along, the addiction took hold, and now they will do anything to get that “fix”… to increase their stats, to become well-known, to have better numbers than someone else. What is lost is why they got into the game. What is lost is their integrity.
I can’t control the integrity of other cachers, but I can control my own. I don’t have to stoop to their levels, to play their games, to sell myself out. By example, I can show other cachers that this isn’t a competition but a recreational activity. It isn’t about besting the other person, but challenging yourself.
Becca, I see three options for you: (1) Delete the bogus log and move on; (2) Leave the bogus log, but write a note immediately above it (if you can), kind of calling them out; (3) Copy the bogus log, include it in a CO comment note to the cache page, using their specific caching name and what they did, then delete their log.
There will always be bullies who take great enjoyment in ruining things for others. When geocaching ceases to be fun for me, that is when I will get out of the game. I will not let others use their words and their actions to dictate how I choose to spend my leisure time.
01/25/2015 at 2:52 pm #2034216I personally wouldn’t respond to them at all. I would delete their log without explaination and save my time and energy for people who want it and appreciate it.

Can I have the GC #’s of your earthcaches please…so I can log them! J/K. Seriously, he could just look up your earthcaches to see which one you are referring to. Duh…what a dweeb.

01/26/2015 at 8:18 pm #2034333If he/she/it didn’t follow the instructions for verification then they didn’t “do the cache” whether they visited the location or not. You’re right, though, it would be hard to believe that they went there. There’s so many EarthCaches out there who’s owners have long ago left the game. This person was probably surprised that anyone even noticed that they’d logged it.
