As the WI state rep. for Police Wives, Inc. I have the opportunity to spread some info. on geocaching to officers nationwide. I’m wondering as cachers what you would like law enforcement to know about GCing regarding placement, if you run into them, etc…

So far I got the discussion going by posting the following on the national forums:

As a group we’ve had ladies (and their families) interested in geocaching but its also something good to make your husbands aware of in case they encounter cachers on the job since they’ll occasionally be reported as suspicious persons or spotted in odd areas.

Geocaching is a sport using GPS units (or Smartphones) to find caches (little containers, anywhere from the size of a pen cap to a large ammo can)…anywhere. Under a park bench, along a trail, near playgrounds, on private property (though the owners are generally aware), on trees along a neighborhood street, in parking lots, on a busy street’s side rail, in grave yards, you name it (those are just the urban ones that come to mind).

So people will be wandering around, ruffling through bushes, taking out and putting back funny looking containers into seemingly random places.

Some cities and counties have ordinances regarding geocaching. Since it is so random your DH might not know of them.

Our community education committee put together a nice flyer and handout specifically for LEOs. The handout is here and the flyer is here.

Thanks for getting the word out!
