Early this spring, I was contacted by the naturalist at the Ice Age Visitor Center, to conduct a geocaching class. The Ice Age Visitor Center is within the Kettle Moraine Northern Unit, just west of Dundee (about a half hour north of West Bend).
I’m looking for some experienced geocaching volunteers (the more the merrier) to come out on the evening of Saturday, June 21st to help out for the cache hunting portion of the program. I would anticipate about a one hour classroom portion, and maybe about an hour or two of temporary cache hunting in small groups.
It would be nice if the volunteer would pass their GPSr around the group during the hunt to give everybody a little chance with the equipment. If you have more than one GPSr, that would be great too. I figure it would be a good idea to keep the owners and their GPSrs together in the same group.
The participants would be coming from around the Northern Kettle Moraine, including the campgrounds at Long Lake and Greenbush (where we had our picnic a couple of years ago).
Tentative schedule for June 21st….
6:00 PM
Volunteers arrive (with their GPSR’s) to receive a download of the temp caches.6:30 PM
The classroom portion starts, conducted by the park naturalist and myself.7:30 PM
Class participants split up into groups with one volunteer per group to go out into the park and find the temporary and permanent caches.Dusk
Return to the classroom. This will be the fifth year running that the WGA has put on this presentation at the Ice Age Center. The people there have been very receptive to geocaching, and a good volunteer turnout would really help further that positive relationship.
Please respond here or via e-mail if you would like to help out. My e-mail is: wga2 dot admin at gmail dot com.
The program is open to everybody, so if you are new to geocaching and would like to come out and learn more, of course you are welcome!
NOTE: A valid park sticker is NOT needed, as the Ice Age Visitor Center is not a fee area.

1) Will this event be listed on geocaching.com? and if if does 2) Does that mean that the temp. caches will not be loggable? Tami

I (personally) have been a part of doing this presentation up until last year, when a pesky family reunion prevented me from making it. Team Deejay (as a fellow WGA member) graciously stepped in and covered for me. Is it an “official” WGA event? No. Has it always been put on by WGA members? Yes.

It would be my preference not to list it on geocaching.com. However, if I cannot round up enough help on these message boards, I will list it on gc.com to reach a wider audience.

….whatever floats your boat…. I won’t be deleting logs (if I post it on GC.com).

“A Little” experience will work just fine. If you know how to push the right buttons on your GPSr to get it navigating to a waypoint, then you know how to follow the little arrow, that’s all that is required.
See you there!
