What are the rules in Geocaching?

Geocaching is a relatively new phenomenon. Therefore, the rules are very simple:

    1. Take something from the cache

    2. Leave something in the cache

    3. Write about it in the logbook

I got this from geocaching.com. Do you guys have any others that should be added.

I wouldn’t really call the above items as “rules”, they are more of a “how to”. This is procedure while at the cache.

The real “rules” are the cache hiding guidelines. There is also a list of “off limits” areas and special rules specific to Wisconsin

    This should be a rule-

Don’t put your garbage in a cache. My sons get pretty disapointed when we hike quite a ways and all we find is garbage. Sometimes, quite literally. I understand one mans trash is anothers treasure, but come on….

Are metal detectors allowable…? I don’t own one nor have I ever used one, but I am curious if they are allowed (I know for sure they are not in Arkansas)in certain states.

I did cache maintenance on one of mine and found a plain white plastic spoon. The person that left it even mentioned it in the log. They took out a decent toy and left “a spoon and a penny”. I guess they thought they were following the “take something, leave something rule”.

I have taken out circles of pvc piping, wet audio tapes, resteraunt menus, rock hard dough and assorted broken toys. And I’m still well under 50 finds. I don’t mind replacing this junk, but I’d like at least one thing in each cache that resembles something fun!

How about a simple rule about treasures. Put something in that you would like to find! That would be the best idea I could come up with. I am leaving a wake of small plastic toys because of my daughters but I will be upping the ante as soon as I get the hang of this whole thing.

Small plastic toys are good, as long as they’re not gross/broken small plastic toys.

Know what? This needs a new thread

      any takers on metal detectors?

      #1748764

Ok metal detectors. If you want to lug them around, I say go ahead. I can’t see that they would help you that much though. Some of the caches are not metal. Or they are in places that using a metal detector could be a problem. Just my say on them.

Thanks John. Actually I was wondering if there were any rules against using them for geocaching purposes. I don’t own one, nor have I ever used one, but I was just curious.
