Geocaching Scavenger Hunt on Green Circle (Stevens Point)

Hi,

I am a part of a local community organization and I am looking to plan an activity for the month of June. This year marks the organization’s 10th year since its charter and I would like a create a fundraiser/anniversary event.

I have limited experience in Geocaching, but my experience has been fun. I was thinking about having a scavenger hunt were the caches are placed along something like the Green Circle and are slowly unveiled over a day and each cache has a clue or a set of numbers that, when placed together, give the coordinates of the event in the evening.

Has anyone implemented or participated in an event like this? I was hoping to get some advice and or feedback on the organization and success of this event. I have questions in particular like:

-Entry fees
-Time line for caches
-Optimal number of caches for a scavenger hunt
-Expected number of attendees
-Cache ideas for clues (i.e. Laminated Card with clues containing numbers or card asking cachers to count number of yellow branches, silos in western landscape, cell towers etc.)

Any advice or feedback given will be great.

Brandon, My initial feeling is that this would not be a true geocaching experience though you can certainly utilize the general geocaching idea to accomplish this scavenger hunt. Why it would not be true “geocaching” is that the “caches” would be temporary and not meant to be actually published on http://www.geocaching.com. By doing these temporary caches, you would not be restricted by the proximity rules of 0.1m between and can use whatever items you want (within reason) and locations.
As far as timing out the release of each clue cache, perhaps a Twitter or Facebook post would work.
Number of caches would be up to you depending on how you work the clues to your final coordinates.
As series caches tend to use only the coordinate minutes as variables, 6-10 would be reasonable.
N44 AB.CDE W089 FG.HJK or N44 20.ABC W89 30.DEF for example.

number of attendees may largely depend on advertising. Fees would be up to the organization.
